Have you ever operated on yourself?

Here lately I have been finding myself in the uncomfortable position of having to reopen the incision in my thumb. I cut it with a kitchen knife and it got infected. I have been to the hospital twice and the doctor's office twice to fix this. Its almost gone, but there is a pocket still pretty deep in my thumb. As it comes to the surface, I reopen it and drain it. It just occurred to me to wonder how many others do this. Are you a diy or do you go to the doctor for everything? I want to make it clear, that I sterilize what I use and its not new infection that I am working out. It is from the cut closing before it heals inside and it leaves a pocket of pus to develop. Why they don't open it, drain it, clean it and PACK it so it doesn't heal over first is beyond me.

Looking down at my belly button this morning I was startled to see a hole with no ring in it. Now, Several years ago for my 17th birthday I had begged my parents (who I really didn't think would give in) to let me get it pierced amdc I love it so there was no way I was going to let it close up. I got some peroxide and repierced it. It didn't hurt too bad and what other choice did I have? lol.

That is the sort of thing I am talking about. I'm not talking about a hard core slice my thumb off sort of thing. lol. I just was getting more of the pus out.

You know I was about to breeze right by this topic and I remembered, YES, I have operated on myself before. Well kind of. I got in an accident that required me getting stitches in both palms (ouch). Sorta got crucified I guess. Both hands were messed up for a while (still are a little). Anywho, I went to the hospital, bleeding, and got stitched up fine no problem. I had no health insurance so I gave a false name and bounced. Well weeks later when I needed to get the stitches removed, I returned to the same hospital and they asked me to produce for them the identification they never asked me for when I came into the emergency room. I told them I'd go get it. I went home that evening and with a razor blade and scissors, cut the stitches myself. It was a very difficult operation because I had to work on my palms. Actually needed another hand but I managed. Like I actually used both hands to work on my right, then my left. Painful and took a lot longer than you'd think. Nine stitches. No help. Whew!

Wasn't too bad. Worst part is my stupid behind goes and plays football that nite and busted my hand open a littl bit again. Had my friends mom, who was a nurse, bandage it back up. My hand still messed up from that and it happened in 1999!!!

get a soup bowl, get a box of sea salt, put water as hot as you can stand in the bowl and a cup of sea salt and mix it up, put your hand or thumb in and wait until the water turns cool, do that 3 time a day and it will draw everything out while drying up the infection. if ya cant do it 3 times a day do it twice a day, you can always make a sea salt paste and put it under a band aid.............. now it's gonna burn "at first" because of the salt, but it goes away in seconds and keeps on drawing out all that crud

Well the thing is last time I opened it, I just got blood. So I'm not sure if it is now just a blood pocket or whether the infection is just that deep I can't get it.

no offense, but what might be clean or sterile to you may not be sterile in the hands of the medical people.. i think you should go back to your doctor to fix it and prescxribe medications for you.. ever heard of tetanus? it's one possible illness you'll get when a wound gets infected. that's serious stuff girl..

Well it is already infected with MRSA. So it can't get much worse than that. And I am up to date on my tetanus shots.

hello tannie, yah,and i knew about the feeling...the discomfort, pain and urge to squeeze out the pus. I've done it several times, months ago i burnt my finger, and i just self medicate, clean it with water and soap, but betadine and burn cream...and,it's gone, there's no evident of scars either. Sometimes,we have to try and do some simple treatment. Poking out pus is simple...just do some sterilization with things to be use. Well, not all people were brave enough to do such things...you're great for doing it yourself. Have a good day always

I just hate doctors and wasting more money when they haven't done it correctly the first two times. And they were two different doctors!

I dont think it a big deal to do little thing like that. I haven't ever had any thing like that so I have not yet had to do anything of that nature. I think I would though if I can do it I will as long as its not anything major because then I might pass out. I tried to pierce my belly button once, but it got stuck and woundn't go though and it made me feel like I was going to pass out!

tanniebabe you just said the magic words, why dont they, you need to get a different doctor as the doctor I go to would have done just that, opened it,put in a drain, then let it heal from the inside out, that way you won't have that deep pocket of pus, so get yourself to an ER or a different doctor and tell them you want it cleaned out and a drain put in so it will heal the right way. you sound like you have some medical experience. I have been there and done that on a sebaceous cyst on my shoulder blade of all places that got infected, and that is what they did, then when it healed, I got the cyst taken out completely so this can never happen again. I worked in hospitals for years as a nurse's aide.

Well I don't have medical background like that, but I have had this thing opened professionally twice now and neither time did they try to keep it open to heal inside out. Even a 9 year old could tell you I heal too quick for it to close as it should. They cut it open and the next day it is closed again. I heal that quick!
