White Sugar as a perpetrator of Diabetes Mellitus...

One of the diseases that doesn't have a cure but can only be managed is Diabetes Mellitus. There are two varieties of it viz., Type I and Type II where Type-II is direct Insulin Dependent. One can understand Nature's(For me God's)Design in making narcotics[ Cocaine, LSD,Heroin, marijuana and the like] to lead to the ruination of a persons life. This is because narcotics have no nutritionsl value and are addictive, till the person is totally destroyed unless rehabilitated. I have always wondered why White Sugar has to be as evil as a drug. It only soothes the palate, esp if you had bitten hot chilli, or have had too much of pepper. It is a taste enhancer for beverages. And in India 90% of the population loves to eat sweetmeats of which there is a veritable variety, in the various cuisines esp. in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Bengal. The poor Diabetic cannot savour any of this! He/She is not looking for heroin. I find this property of Sugar to be one of the cruelest designs of Nature. If nothing, Sugar can get converted into fat and contribute to obesity, another problem. Just cut sugar totally you can simply have a weight loss of not less than 5 Kgs. in about 6 months. Why, a potential diabetic[ having a parent who is a diabetic] can be pushed over the edge and made one with alarming levels of blood sugar, if he/she may become a confirmed diabetic with all those restrictions of sugar, carbohydrates and fats, making life a punishment to live. What do you guys think?

Yes, it is really a hell for a person who is a diabetic. The reason why I had a by pass surgery, is the fact, that I did not take care of my diabetics. It is another matter, that even now, I do not take care of my diabetics. The problem is I love sweets, and I cannot do without it. I cannot take my coffee or tea without the white sugar. The worst part was none of my family members had diabetes, but it has come to me. I do not smoke, and I drink very very occasionally, and in spite of all these,I had a by pass surgery. Diabetes is such a dangerous disease, it cannot be cured, but can be controlled, everyone who is a diabetic, should try to control it.

Truly sad. Diabetes is such an affliction that by masking the advance warning of an impeding heart attack it can even delude one into believing that everything is fine. Whether you like it or not Ramesh please take enough care. The greatest breakthrough in medicine/surgery is going to be when an IDDM patient can have his/her pancreas rejuvenated so that it starts functioning normally! This might be possible by pusuing Stem Cell research and "replace" non-functional cells by new ones working! Let's pray this happens soon!

What you have written is quite true GADHISUNU.My heart attack was also masked because of the diabetes.Yes let us hope the stem cell therapy takes off. It may not benefit me, but I certainly hope the future generations will be benefited because of that.

it runs in the family for many people who get diabetes. there is a such thing as being at a higher risk for diabetes if you eat sugar, but if genetics are not a factor you would probably have to eat lots of sugar just to catch diabetes. examples of people who could catch diabetes from eating lots of sugar would be people who are prescribed medicine that causes their appetite to rise greatly. i don't agree with you on sugar being such a bad thing as long as too much isn't taken and teeth are brushed of use. it can be good to give people that extra boost to get things done during the day. i know personally i couldn't or at least wouldn't try to totally rid my self of sugar as I like it too much and it would be too hard too do so. it does make people hungry after eating sugar because its spikes insulin levels which can contribute to increased weight, but as long as people stay active and keep moving it shouldn't be too much of a factor.

Yeah it runs in the family. But the first family member generations ago must have got it what manner? Let's say God had designed[You could substitute Nature or whatever God-neutral term you would like to read, I would prefer this. Not that I believe there is never going to be an escape from this, but then I would like to leave it God's domain for now, till amy be a reliable solution is found.) the various peoples of the field with proneness for different diseases[like sickle cell anaemia among the Africans, Cardiac Problems and Diabetes Mellitus among Indians and so on) so that he has for sure one time bomb ticking to put a cap over population explosion. These seem to be the Natural end-of-life programming, of course you do have the potential dangers of Natural Calamities. Man is also not resting. He is continually challenging God/Nature by finding cures for most of the scourges. I meant to say because of the proneness[genetic predispostion] among Indian the unbridled consumption of White Sugar is a sure shot invitation to DM!
