Travedling with Children

I am a grandparent and enjoy travel. I like to do things with my granddaughters and have come up with some interesting ways to travel with them in the car. We like to take books of the places we will seeing along the way. When our children were in Jr High we found the best way to take a vacation was to let them choose one thing they wanted to do and everyone had to do it. My oldest daughter choose to visit a major city in the US. She was amazed by Boston and the large department stores they had. What tips do you have for traveling with children? Please share
