A few questions about bipolar disorder..

Hi, I have a few questions about BPD for you all. First off, if you are bipolar yourself, at what age were you diagnosed? Secondly, what kind of medications, if any, do you take for bipolar disorder and any other mental illnesses you may have. Finally, is there anyone in your family that has this illness as well? For me, I was diagnosed at age 18 with being bipolar. I forget what type of bipolar I am, but I believe I have rapid cycling mixed with something else. I take divalproex (valproic acid) and paliperidone (Invega). Also, my maternal grandmother is bipolar, but I also believe that my paternal grandfather is bipolar even though he hasnt been diagnosed. I really hope that one day, when I have children, that they do not inherit this from me.

Actually BPD is not bipolar, BPD stands for borderline personality disorder. I have both and this is how I know. I was diagnosed with bipolar only a few years ago, however, I believe I have had it since I was about 13. This is when I started having problems. I was prescribed all these different types of anxiety and depression and other types of medications, but nothing made much of an impact.

I was first diagnosed as bipolar when I was 38 but the doctor never put it in my chart. He said because I just suffer from anxiety really he put that in the chart. He put me on Klonopin. What a big mistake. It has become increasingly hard to control. About 4 years ago I finally had to talk to another psychiatrist who diagnosed me and put me on the right meds. I believe my mother was an undiagnosed bipolar and I believe I have a bipolar on my dads side as well. I take tryliptal and seriquil XR. I know I have 2 out of three children with bipolar as well. Sorry I think it's inherited.

I myself am Bipolar. I was diagnosed at 20. All my life my dad just called me a drama queen and I misdiagnosed with depression a few times. I am currently on Depekote and Seroquel XR. I was also on Prozac for a few years but I have been without 8 months and doing ok. I don't like the meds tho, they caused me to gain 20 pounds... My father and sister also suffer from it but my dad refuses to see he has it. They tell me its genetic and I can see all the signs in him that I have as well. My biggest problem was the mood swings, the aggression and the insomnia. Even with the meds, it's a daily battle. I've been hospitalized for this disorder twice. I fear I'll pass it to my kids as well. They don't deserve to go thru it.

I was diagnosed when I was 19 and I am taking Lamictal and Klonopin, although they may be adding on Abilify soon- but who knows? I refused to take Depakote and Lithium, so they had to come up with the next best thing, I guess? Haha. My dad is probably Bipolar, but I don't know if he'd even bother with medication.
