Do you drive with both hands?

Recently I started a discussion about if talking on your phone should be illegal. Many of the responses stated that you should keep both hands on the wheel while driving, so it is not safe. I started thinking about that when I was driving today and realized that even without talking on my phone I don't have 2 hands on the wheel a lot of the time. I definately don't keep them in the position they tell you to in Drivers Education. I started looking at other drivers and most of them only had one hand on the wheel as well. So... Do you keep both hands on the wheel while driving? Do you think we are unsafe not to hold the wheel the correct way?

its ok to drive with one hand. but it would be great if both hands. for me i do both. if im in not so busy road, dangerous road, wherein its steep, much more if going down on a hill. i use both hands to control the steering wheel. i dont want to make any mistakes driving downhill, it might take away your own life. and regarding on the position of the hands on the wheel, i lock my hands and grip them on the inside corners of the wheel to control the steering wheel so that it wont slip of my hands.

I'm with you - whether I use one hand or two depends on the road/weather conditions.

yep it depends on weather conditions too. it would be a great risk driving with one hand if there is a storm also.two hand reflexes are better than one. defensive driving.

Well I drove with both hands on the wheel up until I started driving a vehicle with a manual transmission and then would only drive with both hands on the wheel when on the freeway. Since most of my driving is driven on surface streets I'm constantly shifting, so only 1 hand is available on the wheel. Yes I think it's safer to drive with both hands on the wheel, especially under certain driving conditions. In regards to the statement on cell phones it's illegal in the state of CA where I live to talk on the cell phone without a hands free device unless you work for certain agencies & companies, for some reason they are exempt. Seems to me if driving a big truck it should be more important that they have both hands on the wheel, yet they are 1 of the exemptions. That's my 2 cents worth.

Nope. I drive with both hands occasionally but I don't make it a POINT to unless the driving conditions are bad or visibility is poor. I also must say that I would not respond favorably to your other discussion because I do not personally have issues with talking on the phone in the car. I feel like many people who have strong opinions AGAINST other people (or even themselves) talking on the phone are infringing on the rights of other people. That would be the same thing as someone sueing McDonalds because they spilled coffee in their lap and burnt their 'parts' or ate so much food there they blew up and gained 200 lbs - and due to their suit, McDonalds pulled up stakes and disappeared. That would mean someone else's issue caused ME to not be able to drive over there and grab a burger because of their selfish actions due to some self inflicted problem. That's not MY problem. I am not willing to pay for your spilt coffee or weight gain because I didn't spill coffee or gain weight. I don't take very kindly to anybody trying to prevent ME from doing something because they have hurt themselves or someone else. Assuming that I would fall in the same boat is nuts, I won't be 'boxed' up because of somebody else. Anyway, fascinating discussion though, because I am sure a LOT of people will realize they drive 90% of the time with one hand - but we've all been doing it for 20 years so I don't get what the big deal is.

Im a school bus driver and I always keep both hands on the wheel while driving my bus. Its one of our rules and regulations for safety.Im carrying very precious cargo and safety is always 1st.Now when I drive my car its just habit to keep both hands on the wheel, but I do change the radio station or eat in my car while driving. On a bus the only distractions are the kids or other vehicles, there is no radio or eating and cell phones are illegal to use while driving now for bus drivers. If there were less distractions, cell phone, radio, food ,drink..etc in your car then it wouldnt be as hard to keep both hands on the wheel. As for the hand position we are also required to keep our hands at 2 and 10 o'clock this has proven to be the safest for control of the vehicle.I also have to use the hand over hand to turn, no one palm on the wheel. As long as drivers pay attention, be courteous to other drivers, and abide by the posted speed limits they can be safe driver.

I do usually only drive with one hand, but my other hand is FREE in case I need to use it. I may not be the best role model by only driving with one hand, but I think phone conversations while driving should be hands free or on speaker phone at the very least.

As far as I am concerned,I usually both of my hands for driving, which I think it is safe for me ,but also it is safe for the pwople on the road.I think , even though you have a good skill on driving, you can not deal with some emergence as quickly as you can ,then at the same time, you may get a lot oftrouble not only in body but also in mind.

Although the right thing would be to keep both hands in the wheel while I'm driving I admit that I don't do that most of the time. I usually grab it just with one hand and keep the other one relaxed. Also my car is manual, so it is necessary for me to have a hand free for that.

When I was learning to drive, I always had both hands on wheels (when possible) but after I got my license, it seems like somehow I will tend to use only one hand (because I am driving an auto gear car whereas when during learning stage, I was driving manual gear car). But the thing is, it is illegal to drive using one hand. That's against the traffic rules in my country. And also, I think it is quite dangerous to drive using one hand if making a right/left turn.

well.. if your speed is 20 miles per/hour with no traffic and a straight road with a good alingment and tyre balance, you could even let go of your hand.. It all depends on the situation and your skill of driving.. you could drive with one hand if the traffic is not busy and you're good at it. Yes, it is always safe to drive with both hand because anything could happen in just a nick of time. Even a pro's like micheal schumacher drive with both hand on the wheel when he is on track... Human can never escape from making mistake, especially on the road.. so keep both of your hands on the wheel when you feel like to or depends which comfort u the most.. after all, i've always think driving is always for pleasure not pressure :P

The only day I drove with both hands on the wheel was the day I took my driving test. I don't drive with both hands unless it is a very windy day or it is really bad weather. I feel that if I have both hands on the wheel I can't drive as well. One hand wants to take over the other hand. Yes I'm strange! But if I feel like I might put someone else in danger I will attempt to use both my hands. For talking on the phone while driving is just a huge no. Don't do it!

After driving for some years one becomes confident and starts to drive with only one hand by habit at times.I have noticed myself driving with only one hand keeping my other hand on the gear shaft for the need of constant shifting in the city traffic. One hand or two hand it is the attention and focus you have on your driving that counts a lot in safe driving.

Well there was a time that I drive and use my phone. But now, I have manage to control the use of my phone while driving. I do agree that it is very unsafe and it will take out your concentration. As much as possible I drive using both hands.

Yes, I keep both hands on the wheel when I am driving. I doubt I am talented enough to drive with one hand. I think its really up for debate if I am talented enough to drive with both hands but that is another story entirely. I think driving with both hands, no matter what position you put them in, is the best way. Driving with one hand is just asking for trouble.

Yes I do with both hands- and I think everyone should too. But as you say though I normally drive with both hands many a times it comes to driving with single hand, though not on purpose, what happens is when you are changing gears or even adjusting the sound system etc the hand tends to stray away from the driving wheel and does not come back to the wheel

Most of the time I use my left hand to operate the steering wheel.
