Australia has remained on the top for over a decade. It had always privilege of players like Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist, Richy Ponting himself, Damien martyn, Micheal Clarke, Micheal Hussey, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee and the list goes on. All of them are world class players. When you have such a team, the team with professionals, the team in which every player knows their roles, their duties, their experiences are enough to guide themselves on their own, in such situations the role of the captain is not that significant.. The role of the captain matters when the team is having low morale, team is losing, is out of main players. the teams like westindies or pakistan, where you feel nothing is going right. Here is the big test for the captain to lead from the front, boost the morale, make the team unite and tell them that they can beat anyone in the world. But when you are already on top, then the momentum carries on everything.. When Ricky Ponting became the captain, australi was already world champions. Steve Waugh gave him a perfect well-established team, he just had to carryon the momentum. He has lead to two consecutive world cup wins, other many tournaments but still with that sort of team, he lost the ASHES twice. He didnt win the 20-20 WC both times. During this time, when his team needed the boost from the captain, he wasnt able to provide.. So, all i am saying is Ponting is a good captain and has lead to countless victories but he is not the best one in this business.. Perhaps STEVE WAUGH, HANSIE CRONJIE and IMRAN KHAN were..

I do not agree with your assessment. Ricky Ponting is a successful captain no doubt, but his success is as much due to the work of his predecessors and the great team they assembled. In fact, the struggle that the aussies over the last one and half years loosing the Ashes, to India and South Africa is an indicator of this. The fact remained that Ricky Ponting has never been an astute captain with any major moves that changed the complexion of the game. He has been a decent operator who implements the pre-thought out team plan. But to me the likes of Mark Taylor and even Steve Waugh were better captains than Ricky Ponting. In fact, I rate Saurav Ganguly higher than Ricky Ponting. Cheers! Ram
