today there is a headline that the saudi government intervened for the first time in the marriage between a 12 year old girl to an 80 year old man who happens to be a cousin of her father to which her father got a $23,000 dowry. the mother of the girl threatened to get the marriage divorced but she later withdrew this plan. there was also this incident that the mother of another 8 year old girl was threatening to get the marriage of this daughter of hers to a 50 year old man divorced but the judge dismissed the case saying the mother had no right to file a suit on behalf of her daughter. duh? with these circumstances the thought of filipina workers, not the domestic helpers in this case, came to mind. i mean we all know how the domestic helpers are oftentimes abused there. but the professional workers (working in offcies), those who have diplomas, that are working there flashed in my mind. if the saudi government view their very won females as not important so much so are females of another country, another race. right? i mean it is but natural to think like this. one naturally loves one's own. do you fear for your female relatives working in uae?

I respect that it's their culture. I am just glad that our culture doesn't consider women that way although reality would say that there are many instances when women's rights have been trampled upon. Actually, I feel that it's worse that way. At least in the middle east, they treat women that way because that's what their culture dictates. But here in our place?

Hi borg_queen! I know exactly what you mean but honestly, I feel it's a good thing that people have certain advocacy. I'm sure there are people whose fights concern those who are hungry in Africa as well. I mean, we all have our own battles to fight, right? We can't save everyone, can we? That juicy animal makes my mouth water!

hi teach! you reminded me of a feature the travel and living channel did wherein one arabic woman was helping a chef who's doing research on the different kinds of food all over the world and the culture of the people who happens to be the topic of the show. when she showed the fast food chain in uae the host/chef was told that there are two sections in all fast food chains there: one for the family and one for the guys. of course the western host was stunned and asked whether this arabic woman, who obviously was liberal in their culture, was a bit feeling discriminated. she said no. it's the way she learned things are done so it's okay. so it's their culture .

I cant imagine there are parents who let there child marry an old man just because of money? Its like selling your own flesh and blood for a thing that can be lost in a sudden. I think those people doesnt value there family and not a woman. I belive that not all people in UAE do the same thing. We have a client from UAE and we are recruiting workers especially female workers, but we havent encountered issue between them.

that's nice to hear that young girls in uae being married for the dowry isn't a common occurrence there. but it's really troubling that the judge said that the mother has no right to file a divorce suit on behalf of her 8 year old daughter.

I’ve no relatives working there but from what I read in the media, I feel UAE is a very risky place for outsiders to work and stay. There laws are so warped in medieval times, you don’t really know what’s normal or abnormal to them. They have such rigid Islamic laws that it’s a complete abuse of basic human rights. Women’s conditions are of course worst and I think it’s the only country which openly declares with pride that it doesn’t have or support a minimum marriageable age for girls…I mean you can marry off girls as young as 1yr olds to 50yr old man, just as it happened in medieval times.

you're very, very true there. i have a brother who married another filipina. they are both working in uae. of course they married here in the philippines. however, they were rushing our parents to hurry up sending the marriage certificate for couples seen there are sometimes asked for a marriage certificate and if they cannot show one they'd be jailed.

Yeah I can understand your point in there. I think in an arab world women have lesser rights over men. That is why our Filipina workers there are more prone being abused because of this culture they have which for me is backward already. I remember a friend of mine(lady) who is single went there and worked as a clerk in one government military hospital. She wasn't able to stand the situation there because one doctor was attempting to harass her there. She did not give in to his advances and filed her resignation. When she returned here she has seen her replacement and I think three months after she left that woman was pregnant already there.

I don't have relatives or any loved ones working in the UAE. But if ever one of the women I know will plan to work there, I will tell her how bad women are treated there and I will try my best to stop her. I truly hate it when women get discriminated. I would never let women that I love be treated like that.

i'm right with you on your response. why is it that in arab countries women can be treated like that? remember ruffa gutierrez? she wasn't a resident of uae but turkey is a lot like uae. a woman celebrated for her beauty who has a name and influence in the country where she came from and she was still battered. well, maybe her husband has a loose screw. anyway, thanks for posting.

I have a friend working in an UAE airline as a flight attendent. She flies to there from time to time. Obviously she's quite important to this UAE airline because most of the flight attendents are female. Just imagine if all females are deemed not important in the UAE and not hired by the airline, and so all the flight attendents are male. Would this airline be as successful as it is now? Do you enjoy flying on a plane where all the crew members are male?

Hello Ritchelle, This is not a new issue with middleast. This is one of their hidden issues long time before. Girls as young as 8 yrs old married to old guys becoz of dowry. This happens with poor family. The NGO's (non-governmental organizations)were trying to save young girls from this cruel situation, but, often times failed to succeed since the family doesn't cooperate with them. This is a long battle that other countries and media were trying to help and reach out for those poor young girls...abused and used. Our government should not allow our women to work in such places. Ok,we cannot blame our women to work abroad,at least give them some security. But,our own government failed to give our women security, esp from middleast countries(not all countries..but mostly from middleast) I also feel sad about this matter, and i admire those women who had the courage to gamble their safety and life for the sake of their family and kids. But,the sad part is...the women who works abroad were the one sacrificing and their husband were left here in our country sitting and having the comfortable life(ugh...i am saying this is to everyone...but mostly it is) We can never stop our women from going abroad,at least, they should be educated well about the tradition and culture about the country they were going to. That's the least to do to give them idea.

I think it's too young to get married a young girl(12 years old) to 80 year old man.I think it's their culture, we can't change it.If they don't value females in Saudi then don't go on the middle east country.
