Valentine's as it is,February 14th happens to be our traditional Spring Festival

Spring Festival - The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home go back, becoming the busiest time for transportation systems of about half a month from the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with home returnees.

The Spring Festival falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, often one month later than the Gregorian calendar. It originated in the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC-c. 1100 BC) from the people's sacrifice to gods and ancestors at the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one.

Strictly speaking, the Spring Festival starts every year in the early days of the 12th lunar month and will last till the mid 1st lunar month of the next year. Of them, the most important days are Spring Festival Eve and the first three days. The Chinese government now stipulates people have seven days off for the Chinese Lunar New Year.

It so happens that February 14th is our traditional Spring Festival this year (2010), which is also Valentine's Day. February 14th this year is the first day of our lunar new year in China. I am wondering whether February 14th happens to be a traditional festival of your country according to your culture. Anyway, may I wish you all here in advance Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Spring Festival. Take care, friends.

I wish you have a Happy Valentine's Day and also A Happy Spring Festival. In my country here, we called it "Happy Chinese New Year" and we will celebrate it together with our family. As for my Valentine's Day, i will celebrate it together with my family as threesome. But, since this year it fall on the same time with celebrating " Spring Festival", then i think will be busy visiting my relatives houses and even go sight-seeing with them. Since this is the only time, i am able to visit them, as they are always travel to overseas on business trips.

Yes, this is the only time that we are able to spend long holidays with family and relatives. Indeed, i missed it a lot, since from my childhood because only on this special occasion, i will received "angpow" [red packet contains money] from both parents. Besides that, i can also give "angpow" to the children, to make them happy as well.

Hi William!^^ I have always wanted to see how Chinese celebrate their Lunar New Year. I only see it on TV. I think it would be fun to witness it personally. We would have gone to Hongkong to see their celebration of the Lunar New Year but we were not able to avail of the cheap promo tour package so we didn't push through. The only tradition that we follow here during February 14 is the celebration of Valentine's Day. Schools commonly celebrate this. They put up Valentine's Day decorations and sometimes hold a program and some would conduct a valentine's day fair. And then of course, lovers would be celebrating this and would make time to go out on this day.

Hello secretbear. I am wondering whether there is an overseas China Town in your country. If yes, then it is much easier to see how they celebrate the Spring Festival. It is exciting and a lot of fun with the activities during the festival activities. Take care, my dear friend.

As it is spring is the season of love and youth so its double celebration time for you. Yes, I too heard that its Chinese New Year on that day…we have a medium Chinese community in my city and every new year, they take out huge processions with dragon dance and all..definitely worth a look and the entire city goes there to watch them perform and gorge on sumptuous home-cooked Chinese food.

Hello friend. I am glad that you could learn some Chinese culture from the Chinese communities in your country. You are right that it is our tradition to have dragon and lion dance during the Spring Festival. It can be seen on the streets during the fifteen days of Spring Festival. It is a festival for family get-together, the most important festival for us Chinese. Have a good time, friend.

Hi William! How are you doing? Sorry, to have missed your discussions. Was little busy, hope you understand. So, come September 14 is the starting of the Spring festival? Great to know that. I had no idea whatsoever. Here, we don't have any traditional festival on that day. Valentine's Day is also not a big thing with the general population and only recently people are celebrating it. Even though, I have been celebrating it since my school days but there are many who did not. In villages, people have no idea at all.

I'm also a Chinese. I think it is difficult to decide whether to enjoy the Spring Festival with family, or spend a romantic Valentine's Day. But in my view, Spring Festival is our traditional festival, Until now, it is not just a festival to the Chinese, but a symbol of culture and familial affection. So I think it's much better to enjoy the Spring Festival. What's more, We have our own valentine's day--Double seventh festival, haa, it's also very romantic and moved.

Most Chinese South Africans celebrate Chinese New Year by attending huge dinners or balls at our community centres. The date of the Lunar Spring Festival changes according to the phase of the moon but Valentine's Day is always on 14 February. Happy New Year and Valentine's Day to all.
