Open Source software is not something new . It's been here for the last 20 years . In recent years , with the development of great Linux distros with huge involvement from developers worldwide , it became more popular . And obviously , if so many programmers are into the game , the quality of the software will be much higher . But we have to keep in mind that until a few years , Linux was known as a programmer's OS . Most of the things were done from the command line interface . Things have changes now with the arrival of fancy GUIs and those fantastic compiz effects. I also run a dual boot configuration . After trying dozens of distros I stopped at Ubuntu with Gnome . The only thing I don't understand is why governmental institutes like schools don't try open software . I would be a lot more cheaper than that Micro$oft they currently use and it would also run better .

Yes is true i think the usual consumer user have not much interest in linux!!May be because i heard that many people always feel towards linux strange feeling such as they always marked this os or softwares as difficiult or just suitable for tech alternative or technician and so on... in reality i think that mny people are scared to do all by themselves such as they must download an os,configure it and perzonalize so many told why i must change if i have windows pre-installed? I think friendly os as ubuntu or mandriva can be not so difficult bu some people have not many patience to read guidelines and they stop when they heard talking about partition or other system components...so may be in the future this approach will change with a communication different used by linux world till now!!we will see..

I love Linux! It's a much better operating system then Vista, Windows or anything! It's so much faster and much simpler. Plus, there are awesome functions like multiple screens and different animations when exiting or minimizing. The only problem is the laptop i'm on is so slow it wouldn't work on it! Whoever thought up the design of this computer put the dang fan on the bottom so I have to constantly hold it up too cool down!

I do agree that openSource makes Years of MS and Apple's project shatter to shame. I use Ubuntu 8.10 version as it support my PC at the fastest rate.
