Aaah, Gobstoppers!! Remember them? How awesome were they? I have a link to them to remind you what you are missing with these sweets that nearly break your teeth they are that hard. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gobstopper Can you remember any more sweets from the past? I did chew this bright pink bubble gum that lasted ages and I could blow massive bubbles with it...which usually splattered all over my face and got caught in my hair when they popped! A lot of sweets were made of liquorice such as sticks (I have even chewed real liquorice sticks from the Chemist), those little black chews that I can't remember the name of...oh, and I used to love those Sherbet Dips. They made such a mess but nobody cared! Also Rainbow Crystals, I loved those too. Can you remember anymore that I've missed? My mind's suddenly gone blank!!

I can think of some. Chews, Bazooka Bubblegum, Spice Drops, Lemon Heads, and Boston Baked Beans. These are all that I can think of at the moment. There are more but they just can't come to my mind at the very moment. I remember Gobstoppers and Jawbreakers. They still sell these in the stores along with the ones that I just mentioned in this post.

Oh and Chicker Stick, is another one. It is orange and it is sweet like a Butterfinger candy bar. It tastes kind of like this.

Oh yes... I remember those nearly breaking my teeth and how my jaws used to ache and I used to suck away at them feeling happy when they started to get down to a more manageable size. Why I used to punish myself in this way though, I have no idea. There were lots of other sweets that were far better, but I guess these gobstoppers used to last a long time and considered to be value from the few pennies we used to get as pocket money in those days. Bubble gum was great when you first put it in your mouth and I remember the old song, "Does your chewing gum lose it's flavour on the bedpost over night". I remember thinking that it lost if flavour long before I spat it out! And I didn't fancy the idea of leaving it on the bestpost (even if I did have one!) to go hard and flavourless! Thanks for the memories! _Derek

Thank you! I've never heard of that "leaving chewing gum on a bedpost overnight" so I've never tried it! I used to blow some amazing bubbles though and the bubble gum in those days used to last absolutely ages. Do you remember Screwballs from the Ice Cream Man? Haha, the little ball of chewing gum in the bottom of those was absolutely rubbish wasn't it?!

Hi Janey1966, I used to love gobstoppers, all the changing colours where just amazing when I was a kid and I think there were ones that had chewing gum at the centre if I remember correctly. I also like the really hot ones called fireballs. But I would say my all time favorite would be the good old fruit salad chew. I must have a look and see if they still sell all the sweets that have been mentioned in your discussion just out of curiosity, well that and a sweet tooth

They are in a small package and it was brightly colored, and when you opened it it was like very tiny pieces of gum but when you put it in your mouth they would pop. L.O.L.

I hate the ones that sell now. The come in those mixed candy bags. They are soo hard. Always take them out when I'm doing goody bags for kids for bdays. I'm afraid a kid might choke with it. I think I would choke and I'm a grown up lol

Oh dear, that doesn't sound good. I was fearless as a child, would eat anything! I am more wary of them now though because I very nearly choked on a bon bon sweet at work many years ago. A lady had to do that heimlich manouvre, it failed so she had to push the sweet DOWN my throat! Can you believe that? Luckily, I'm still alive to tell the tale...so you are right in being wary of sweets, some are too big...even for adults!

O dear, how awful! I'm glad yo are safe and sound Like I said, I take them out of goody bags because I wouldn't forgive myself if a kid would choke with one of those candies given by me at birthday parties etc.

Well, wet your wax lips and smoke your licorice pipe! There's a store here in Hamilton that specializes in "vintage" candy. Check 'em out at: http://www.candiwerx.com/products.html

Yes, we have websites like that here too. It's about the only place you can get nostalgic sweets from nowadays. There was a shop at the top of a hill near Mum's and they had rows of sweet jars. Quarter of this, a quarter of that. It was great fun figuring out what to have next!

Oh yes I remember gobstoppers you can still buy them at my local shop along with rainbow crystals and sherbet dips. My kids love the gob stoppers. I don't know if anyone one else remembers them but I use to love Pacers they were like a mint version of opal fruits. They had three green stripes on them. You can no longer buy them. Do you mean black jacks they always use to turn your tongue black.

Oh my God, Pacers!!! Yes, of course I remember them! They were brilliant, they really were and thanks for telling me about them. I'm so glad you still call them Opal Fruits too. I just can't get used to the Starburst change of name! Yes, Black Jacks, they were awesome as well and yes, they did turn my tongue black lol.

Yes, I remember the Gobstoppers! I loved them and I'm wondering what's happened to them, are they still in existence? I haven't seen one for a very long time. During my school years this is one thing that I absolutely had to have! I would finish class and then head straight to the local sweet shop and purchase a pack of gobstoppers! I think they are pretty bad for your teeth though! I probably won't return to purchasing them as I want to look after my teeth now! Andrew

I do remember the Gobstoppers candy. They were like candy you can lick and taste for ages. They would really last a really long time in your mouth. I used to buy them often at the local candy store. I also remember penny candies and those fizzy candy too. They would just fizz up in your mouth.

I can remember those ridiculously massive gob-stoppers that were the size of a clenched fist They were so big you had to lick away at them to erode the gob-stopper slowly, but your tongue always seemed to start to bleed before you reached the centre. Also, what about those gumball lollies? You know the ones that were covered with a pop-culture icon like a Star Wars character or a WWF wrestler, and a small clump of gum was fossilised in the centre. Ah, the good old days

I must admit I can't remember Gumball Lollies, but it's a great name! I do remember strange lollies we could buy from our Ice Cream Man...and he used to give us amazing flavoured Italian Ice Cream, including Banana, Strawberry, Lime, Lemon, Vanilla, Chocolate, Chocolate Mint Chip, and loads of others...I'm pretty sure there was an awesome Liquorice Flavoured Ice Cream which was divine. Sometimes if we couldn't make our minds up the Ice Cream Man would make us an Ice Cream with three flavours on top of one another. Ice Cream just isn't the same now...not from vans anyway.

wow! gobstopper was my favorite way back my elementary days! I loved how it stays for such a long time in my mouth and how I wait for each color to change.. Other favorite candies I used to eat when I was a kid was nerds, runts, crybaby and mouthwash(not sure if I remember it right. Its the chewing gum that colors your mouth).. Oohh.. how i miss them. I should check out the candy stores and see if i can still buy some of them. =)

You might be able to buy them online. There is a lot of nostalgia around regarding sweets we all enjoyed as children. That is why there are online shops specialising in this field because all the sweet shops have closed down due to the big supermarkets taking over and all selling the same rubbish.
