Doubling of judges' salaries by City Mayor --- what do u think of this?

Monthly salaries of judges, justices and court employees are paid for by the Supreme Court in our country. Some of them are getting minimal allowances from the city or provincial government where they are assigned. A City Mayor here announced that he will increase the monthly allowances of judges and justices assigned in the city equivalent to their basic monthly salaries. He has been reported to be saying that it is his way of support and assistance to the "underpaid" court officials in these hard times. Knowing that there are cases (or there may be, in the future) where the city government (or provincial) or the City Mayor, personally, are parties to it, what do you think of this impending grant to double the salaries of judges and justices?

If the judges are in fact underpaid, then I think that it is the right thing to do to double their salaries. Everyone in the world today deserves to make a salary that is workable. If they aren't making enough to get by then they are really in need of some kind of change in their salary. Yes, the mayors, etc. may benefit from this choice in the future, but for right now I think that it is the right thing to do for the judges that are underpaid.

Hi Dorannmwin, We may consider them underpaid based on the amount and quality of work that they do and the high professionalism of being a judge. They are lagging behind in terms of income compared to even lawyers who are also in the legal field. Some people are worried about the public's perception on this. As the judges' salaries come from a different NATIONAL government unit which is the Supreme Court, critics think that the City Mayor's move is an attempt to bribe or influence the independence and impartiality of the court. The public know for a fact that there are cases in court where the City Government is a party to them.
