Government is just a term that describes a group of people, just like a corporation, union, or church. Government just like any other title of group does not exist only the people that form the group exist. So when you hear of government providing stuff you are actually hear about people providing stuff. The only problem is these people that form what we call government does not provide this stuff from their own pocket. Now that would be fine, but you do not hear how some person from the group called government paying for everything out of their own pocket. What you do hear is someone from the group called government taking from someone and giving to someone. Actually to take it a step further these people who form the group called government do not actually physically take anything from anyone. The people from the group called government form another group called tax collectors, arm them, and let them do the dirty work. When we get right down to it government does not provide anything it is still each other providing for each other, except we have these middlemen with gunmen who take all the credit.

"...does not exist only the people that form the group exist." So, your house does not exist, only the bricks, timber, etc. of which it is made exist? all the best urban

So government does exist, then what does it fell like, what does it look like, what does it smell like? A house exist because you can touch, smell, and see it. If you want to say a house does not exist then that would be fine, that would just be a point of perspective, but governments still do not exist only people. If I am not correct then you should be able to show me a picture of government without people in the picture.

Ha ha ha, you are like the American tourist that was being shown round Oxford University, they were shown this college and that college, one after the other. Then they said, "Gee, there all great but where is the university?" So, by your reasoning a university doesn't exist, nor society, nor a nation, a church? Yet these things are causal entities. What of consciousness, I can neither see nor smell that, does that exist? Do you think existence is limited only to concrete particulars? all the best urban

I disagree, government provides security, safety, and hopefully assurance that your rights are protected. It is to give us these intangible things that are the most important functions of government. Now, government isn't a physical entity, obviously. It is an idea in the peoples' collective minds though, not a group of people as you say it is. The people working for government each have a certain idea of government that guides their actions. Now, you may feel your government is not providing these functions above that I stated. In that case, in my opinion it is your right to do something about it.

But government still does not provide security, safety and protect rights, people provide security, safety, and protect rights.

Well it should. But, as I mentioned above, the people have the right to change the government if they do not believe that their government is providing these functions.

That's a good way of looking at it. The government is not supposed to provide anything other than protection from invasion and keep the constitution safe. 200+ years after it was written, the government now tries to take care of us cradle to grave--what an abomination the founders would see!
