Do you believe there is a desert in Antarctic? What do you think if i say it is true that there is a desert in Antarctic. It is called the Dry valley. Try to google it and find the info. I believe there should be some information about it. But, logically speaking, how can there be desert in cold region? will find more information and post them in your responses.

Deserts are defined after how much rain/snow they get per year, so a desert in a cold region is certainly possible. It only needs to get less vapor than it looses. I think there's several very dry and cold areas that are defined as desserts, some are quite high up in the mountains I suppose. A fast search later: Antarctica and the Arctic seem to be classified as the world's two largest deserts. Or desserts, as I keep writing. Ice for dessert today ...

Vanilla ice-cream with raspberries and chocolate sauce *smiles hungrily* When I thought a bit more about it, I realized that I of course have seen several programs about arctic deserts and the crazy Norwegians skiing across them. If there's a lonely, cold place somewhere with snow on it, some Norwegian will feel the urge to walk across, preferably on his/her own. Crazy people :-)

Hi Torunn. Yeah. i did some research and find out that there are no water vapors there so, the area is so dry that even there is no ice left and only dry land. that's funny of you playing desert with dessert. There are always some mistakenly spoken for the children in my country when they are trying to learn english and are asked to speak "dessert" but they will say "desert". ^^

I think your not watching some news regarding that particular place, cintoy. Antarctic region is divide under United State or America and Russia. They set military base there and protecting that land for any intrusion because that land is rich of oil and all other natural resources and other living things there that almost gone...

I heard about this, yes, probably on the Discovery channel or something. There's no precipitation there, that's why it's a a desert.

Hm... i don't know if it appears in discovery channel. But it sure is because there is no precipitation. The wind are blowing the vapor away that makes it precipitate.

The Antarctic Desert is actually a very cold region in the eastern site of Antarctica. It occupies the Wright, Victoria and Taylor valleys, which are near to McMurdo Sound. The Antarctic Desert receives very little rain but still is very cold place. Powerful winds are keep the desert from building ice. It would be a great place to visit if there are flights to that place :)

Wow. you know it. Yeah. I think the place looks beautiful in the picture. It's just that we should be preparing lots of water as it will be real dry there with no source of water.

yup. It's a dry land that there are winds that blows away the rain vapors so there is no rain at that spot. So, it's called dry valley. but it's still cold area, just without the ice thing. ^^

I've never heard any such thing but I guess it's possible. I don't know that much about Antartica. It might be interesting to do some reading on it, though. Who knows what all I might learn? Kathy.
