A teacher was suspended because she has a photo in facebook

It is really debatable issue after I heard that from a radio. A local elementary school teacher was suspended because she has her photo holding a beer posted in facebook. According to the principal's explanation, she damaged the school image, and it might cause bad influence to her students, since most students have internet access. On that teacher's side, she can has her own private life after the school hours. The school board has no right to interfere her social life. So, if you are a parent, would you agree the local school board to suspend that teacher?

Yes... I noticed teacher's seem to be banned from facebook by their respective school policies.

THat is conpletely fine as long as she is not interacting with any of her elementary students on facebook, (they shouldn't have a facebook anyway!)

I can see both sides of this issue. I personally think that photos on facebook should be PRIVATE. Only to be seen by the right people. If you are a teacher you should not have students on your facebook. If you insist then there shouldn't be any photos that a parent / princapal wouldn't like. This teacher could either create an account for her students to friend her on or keep her private personal one personal! I don't personally think that she "damaged the schools image" but I do think that she should be a role model meaning keep things seperate! Obviously she either had her pictures avaliable for the public to see or students "friended".

i had been a part of a school's management team and one offense cannot be the only ground for a professional's termination for any working institution would be in big trouble with the department of labor and employment of their country. i'm sure the principal just didn't point out the teacher's other offenses, for this is unprofessional and, thus only commented on the termination of employment due to facebook.

If the pictures are not decent or bad example of course she degrading the school, but if she's doing good things on web that's alright. Nowadays most little children knows everything. Teachers & parents will guide their children on wed and tv. parental guidance is advice.

I don't agree with this. How can they do like that. She has her personal life. It's very bad. More over face book is not bad. She doesn't apply for wrong things to do there. I don't agree.

That is a really harsh punishment for a teacher. I think that is too much that a picture like that would mean suspension on her part. One thinsg about that is putting pictures on the net cannot be controlled anymore there is this feature in Facebook that when you post picture and tagged a face in your name it will also be in your account too. So it may be that she may not have posted that picture but someone tagged it for you then your photo would go directly to your account.

As a teacher you are already expected to act in a certain way--you know, to be a role model to students. So given that the teacher already knows that her students are added to her facebook account, then it's automatically her responsibility to be cautious to what she would be posting on her facebook account. ;) In the professional code of ethics of teachers, a teacher carries even the name of the school that's why whether outside school premises or not, he/she should act in a certain way expected of him. Yes it could be that he/she's just socializing, but granted that he/she has responsibility in his school and students, he is still expected to act in a proper way. I'm a teacher myself.. well yes, I don't see any harm in drinking because I also drink sometimes but I make sure I keep it as personal as possible, without my students knowing.

i don't think this is a legal ground for her suspension and i really could agree with the school board's decision. and in my opinion, the school has nothing to do with their personal or private matters. and besides, the occasion never happened in the school grounds and not during school hours.

that is right. That is after hour personal life. The school has no right to interfere, nor they can simply suspend a teacher like that without a reasonable explanation. That is not convincing at all.

Wow! That's ridiculous. It has no bearing on her qualifications as a teacher. I think this is crazy. Where does this sort of thing stop?

That is really ridiculous. How can the school authority suspend a teacher for socializing?? I agree with you in this regard. Everyone has his or her own personal life and he or she is free to deal with it in their own ways. Its not good to interfere with the rights and liberty of the person, specially when someone is outside the school premises or not at work. The school board has no right to interfere with her social and personal life. This is very unfair.

we cant blame them specially as a teacher they must serve as a rule model for their students and so they must at least maintain a good credibility and clean image towards them specially facebook is a public site where anyone can visit your site unless you put it in public to be viewed by friends only.

Funny how you think this teacher should be a roll model and present a clean image, did you think that Ted Kennedy should have put his drinks down and been a good roll model being a US Senator?

I kind of agree with the teacher destroying the image of the school -but a smal punishment would do, not firing her. But it is also the teachers fault, wherever she goes, she should always bear in mind that she is a teacher and she has responsibilities...

I know for students some schools make the students sign a code of conduct paper. I refused when I was in school to sign it knowing that I didnt want to get in trouble for breaking an agreement for something that I do outside of school. I have known kids who did things outside of school and were kicked out of school for it when it never happened in the school or on the school grounds at all. I think teachers should be allowed to do whatever they want in their personal lives outside of school. If was her profile picture then I guess it wasent the smartest thing for her to put it up knowing that anyone who came across her profile would see her picture. But if her profile is completely private and she didnt have any students on her friends list and it wasent her profile picture then no one should have been able to see it and give her a problem. If that is the case she could probably fight it and win!

I think that this is a prime example of stupidity in today's world! That teacher or any teacher should have the right to have their photos on facebook for the world to see if they so choose! This is entering the area of private life! Ok, having your photo on facebook doesn't make it private but this is in no way related to how well the teacher performs as a teacher. I think that the school board made the wrong decision in this case and have taken an excessive action in my view. Andrew

The School is way out of line. her picture was on HER time not the schools. and who at the school has become a photo nazi?? THAT is the person i would be seriously checking into. we are NOT behind the iron curtain or the Mao china - and thats what this smacks of. i hope the teacher goes after the people who suspended her

If the teacher was drinking while on the job or at a school function then I can see the school board getting involved. Since the teacher was in fact driking off the job I feel that the school board is over reacting. The teacher is allowed to have a social life outside of the job. If people worked all the time they would end up having health issues and would get burned out very fast. The school board does not have the right to tell the teacher how to spend her personal time.
