My parents recently sat me down to tell me that my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. They found it early and it is contained so everyone is positive that he can have the DaVinci robotics surgery and be back on his feet with minimal recovery time. Has anyone else had an experience with prostate cancer treatment?

My great uncle had prostate cancer, but we didn't even hear about it until it had been treated. I know cancer always sounds scary, but when caught early many types are not that bad. The reality is most men will get prostate cancer if they live past 70. I'm sure your dad will be just fine.

Thank you for your response. I'm sure he'll be fine too, thank you for the reassurance! I think I just needed to hear it from other people who have dealt with it too.

I haven't had prostate cancer but my brother was diagnosed with it a year or so back. Luckily, it was in its early stages. He did not have surgery but he did have to undergo a rather trying combination of chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. This was only for a few months, however, and he was able to continue with his job while he was having it. He has now been declared cancer-free and he did not have to lose his prostate. I'm sorry to hear about your Dad - and that 'C' word always makes one feel very apprehensive - but be assured that, if they believe that they can use robotic surgery, then there's a very strong chance that he will be completely cured and will live to a healthy old age. Cancer patients, especially, need a lot of reassurance and to feel the quiet confidence of those around them. In many areas there are counselling organisations who can go through the person's concerns, explain about the treatments in detail and, sometimes, arrange for one to meet and talk to people who have been through what you are going through.
