Okay, my bf and I have a small apartment together and I can't really complain about anything because he takes care of all the bills and everything financial. However, the lease to our apartment is in my name. Our rent has been late from the beginning and the landlord has been very lenient on us. If the rent isn't paid by the 5th of each month, $100 is added on. The landlord came by today banging on the door and yelling my name..since it was the 2nd time this week he has come by. My bf had told him that the rent would be paid by now. The landlord told me..he hasn't received anything and if he doesn't get it by today, then he is going to turn it over to his attorney on Monday. I surely hope he doesn't kick us out of here. We have nowhere to put our stuff. Before we finally got this apartment, I was living in the back of my bf's store.. I don't want to go back there. I really don't. It doesn't even have a shower. I was bathing out of a bucket! Yes, I KNOW! My bf and I are having some problems right now so we haven't really talked in the past few days. Any comments or ideas on what 'turning it over to the attorney' may mean??

Hi CarmenA- I am sorry that you are having trouble with paying your rent and with the landlord. I don't know what the landlord meant by turning it over to his attorney but I assume that means the attorney will look over your credit, your past payments (and when they were made) and decide from there whether to evict you, fine you more money, or try come up with another means to get the rent, etc. Good Luck to you!

I agree, it means that your landlord is planning to institute the eviction process. Continue to try to work directly with your landlord and maybe you can avoid going to court. If he refuses to take the rent money put it aside and have it with you when you go to court so that you can offer to pay. If you and your boyfriend have been late every month your landlord may be fed up with the situation.

If you can, have a rent party; charge admission, have food for sale, and explain why your doing it and go from there. It's not right that it's come to this, but you have to consider what you need to do.

I don't know much about that but I would explain to your landlord about your situationa and what is going on some are pretty understanding about that back when my ex husband left me with 2 kids I was living off his income and they were pretty understanding and willing to work with me....It could mean that he was promised a certain date and you have always kept that date in the past that he is taking legal measures to get his money.

It means he may be considering an eviction preceding, if he is saying that the property itself will be turned over to the landlord then it means he hasn't been paying his legal bills and most likely the lawyer intends to put a lien on the property.
