what is the legal definition of "resident alien"?

One of my friends who is from Asia and has a student visa to stay in USA for studying for 3 years. She is now going to apply a tax return but the instruction the one she is applying for is not for USA citizen or resident alien. I did some research online, seem that only those holding green card will be classified as resident alien, right? So even she is allowed to stay in USA for years, she is not resident alien, is that right?

thats right as far as I know but I would check with the tax people to be
sure. she has a student visa so thats probably a different tax form but the tax people could give you two the right answers. do check to be sure,
