Keep Fruit Salad Fresh

When I chop up apples, bananasoragnges and such I want to keepthem fresh if I dont finish it. My foods teacher in the ninth grade taught me to put them fruit in orange juice - Sometinhg about the sugar and acids or something keeping it fresh and crisp and from going brown and gucky. Is there other options? Can you use any juice? Is there something healthier that works better?

Thats cool to know. No one ever taught me that! Have you tried it to know if it really works or not? I know if you let apples and bananas peeled sit overnight they turn brown and I hate that it makes a fruit salad look awful. I wonder how much orange juice you have to add to keep them from turning brown. I dont want a soupy fruit salad. A friend of mine told me that if you mix lemon juice in with apples it will keep them from turning brown. I should try it but havent yet. I am interested to see how it works.

Lemon, orange or any citric fruit will do the trick as they are acid and will not let the oxidationd process begin. You have to cover with juice the entire area that is exposed. But if you do not like the fruits juicy, put some juice in a cup and bath each fruit. Then take them out and place them in a covered place. The less air, the better. So check that the jar is a good size (not too big).

She's right the juice has to touch any exposed fruit area and yes, it does make it a little juicy which is why Im looking for a new way. However, you could work with that. If you use a shallower bowl for the serving and use vbowl to serve it that are a little deeper. It looks pretty nice if you have a variety of coors in the fruits. Ive tried it and it works but using orange juice you get a sliht orange taste on the outside of the fruit but nothing thats noticable or bad. :) Happy mylotting.

Orange juice, lemon or lima juices do the same. It has to do with impeding oxidation. But some juices do nothing. It is the acid that helps. Anyway, if you can, the best is to cut them in pieces as late as you can. And big pieces are better as you don“t have so much contact area with the air.
