Do You Look at Things from Both Sides?

April 2, 2010 11:21pm CST
Everything has two sides to look at. Take an easy example of a half-filled glass of water. One can say that it is half full, while the other can say that it is half empty. Asking you people this question, i remembered a joke that my teacher used to tell me. There was a man who was a judge (magistrate). In his first case the plaintiff argued so persuasively that he exclaimed: 'I believe you are right' The clerk asked the judge to take back his words, for the defendant had not been heard yet. the judge was so moved by the eloquence of the defandant that he cried out as soon as the defendant finished his evidence: 'I believe you are right!' The clerk of the court was shocked: 'Your Honour, they cannot be both right.' 'I believe you are right!' said the judge This joke was intended to amuse as well as to teach you that the judge was looking at the case from both sides, evident with his last sentence. So have you people taken decision after looking at things from both sides, or do you look at things from both sides before taking decisions?

I try to. I am older and think different than i did when younger. I have grandchildren and try to see things more like they do.

Thanks for your comment. I have observed that usually the older one look at things from both sides and they donot take decisions apruptly and emotionally like we young generations do...

The thing is, i try to look at things from both sides but sometimes it just seems like a one way street and you don't have to look for the other side. if you to the other side you might get hit by what's coming on the side you should be looking for.

First of all, I appreciate you comment. Frontvisions101, you are right that at some intances, you have one way to go and you dont have to look at the other sides. But on the other hand, in many situations, good judgements are made when you look at both sides...

That's right. but it's not all the time that you have to look at both sides to make good judgements. just a thought.

hie yasee, it takes patience and maturity to look and weigh things carefully before deciding. we as humans have this habit on making decisions based on past experiences, hurts, joys, happiness, frustrations, our bringing up, cultures, customes, norms , family background and education. a person who is from rich background has a tendency to based decisions on how his parents judge something or maybe conditioning. the same applies to a poor person. its education that can helps break this barrier and the person's maturity plus his religious inclination. some people will look at poverty as a vicious circle and thus have to work hard to get a good education and move out from his local communities. thus a pessimistic and an optimistic person looks at life challenges differently. one looks at it to struugle to reap a good harvest while the other one will loose hope. he may even ask himself, 'why is this happening and get into depression'. the optimistic one will look squarely at the issues at hand and tell himself, 'time to pull up my socks and get moving. when things get tough, the tough gets moving.' just dont dwelve into self pity and dont quit.

Thanks for your comment. Yes I completely agree that patience, maturity and experience helps you in looking things from both sides.

You mean there's only two sides? I've been looking at things from the top, from the side, from the bottom, with one eye closed, at an angle, with the other eye closed... Heck, if I'd known there was only two sides, I probably could have made the decision by now. Does that answer your question?

First of all i appreciate your comment. My question was that people actually take the other side for granted. They dont give attention to the other side of the thing when making decision and that is a practical thing amongst us.

Yes, this is what I do to make out things. If we don't look at both the sides it is generally very easy to make a wrong assumptions or a wrong thoughts in someone else or something else. There can always be a reason behind something, even if it is very weird or unbelievable. So, there is no problem for me in taking a chance to look both the sides instead of making a mistake.

yea your right 100%, sometime being biased can lead us to misunderstanding and can cause trouble, so before you act you must examine first both side and then express your opinion, thats the best way i know, hehe

actually this depends. and i think in real life it is not easy to make this practical. even when you see the both side some time it is hard to take the decision. but if you see one side only then you can decide atleast whether to go with this or just to leave.

Although you have to look at things from both sides, you still have to weight as which is the better angle. You cannot be both at the same time. Otherwise, people will think that you are fickle-minded (decision-changer) or a person who cannot make up a solid decision.

Unfortuntaly i tend to look first at the negative aspect being a bit pessimistic from nature. But I am trying to see the bright side in other things. It can lead to a happier and easygoing life. We need to appreciate everything.

Sometimes, looking things at both sides can be pretty bad. I do listen and figure out things but I will never judge base on something I have not personally witness. If I had to pick though, it wouldn't be something I'd enjoy figuring out, that's for sure.

it isn't always necessary to look from both sides but it is best if one does so. we all know the saying "don't judge a book by its looks". sometimes when we have to take decision it is best if we just look it from the side which is best to you. if start thinking who would get the bad effect of your decision then just forget it you can never do anything right.
