Which do you prefer: E-books or the traditional paperback?

I'm starting to have a problem with storage. My books are piling up but the bookshelves are not expanding. I am now contemplating on shifting to e-books. I just do not know if I'll enjoy reading from an electronic gadget compared to smelling the crisp pages of the book. How about you, which do you prefer?

I do prefer traditional books over electronic books. I've been so used to books for so many years. However, it seems that ebooks are soon becoming a trend. Over the years, I have collected quite a volume of ebooks. These are majority electronic documents in PDF format. Ebooks do have some advantages over traditional books. Ebooks never grow old with age, unlike traditional books where the pages turn yellow and dusty, and the printing fading off. I haven't had the good fortunate to try out ebook readers like the Kindle. I use only my laptop to read ebooks for now.

hi bubbletush, traditional paperback allows me to move from one part of my house to another, in buses, trains, or simply anywhere without so much hassle. i'v given away some of the books i'v read or exchange them for another as storage has always been a problem.

A friend of mine has suggested that iPhone has an eBook reader function, my only concern though is that the screen is too small and I think I will not be comfortable reading the book from the phone. I suppose you will enjoy the actual book more considering you are working in a call center and I suppose you are in front of the computer all the time, at least the actual book will somehow give your eyes a break from staring at an electronic device. thanks for the input.

Hello! Most cell phones these days gives you the eBook reader function which should answer your concern regarding portability. As for storage, you simply have to upgrade to higher memory card. A 1 GB memory card is actually enough for me to have 70 songs and 10 eBooks with plenty of room to spare. As you can see I really favor eBooks. There are however times when you want to actually hold the book. Nothing compares to opening a fresh book and smelling the "hot-off-the-printer" scent so sometimes I just want to get an actual book. Printed books awesome for someone like me who works in call center where any electronic device is banned.

Dear friend, I used to collect books during my child hood days especially those comics, short story books and other fancy books. Later when internet came I began to spent time on it. But still I used see that old collection of books as something precious for me. But as for information I do consider e-books as it is much easier to access. But those other books is much easier to carry anywhere. But beware not to lost it.

it would be a matter really of which books are worth collecting and which books will do good in an e-book format. and yeah whether the traditional book or an e-book, both are precious and will be heartbreaking if lost.

Well ebooks is better option then the traditional paper books, why I say this because it will save environment and paper first of all and even the space in home. When we read of the book and what to do with it after that, we sell to second hand stores people for loss. So, I am happy with Ebooks, they are easy to get on internet and we can read it on a screen but eyes do get strained if we are using CRT monitors, LCD screens does not much give strain to my eyes.. But reading the crisp pages of book is always which I am going to miss with ebooks.. I buy a book only if it can be readable again and again, i mean about novels and story books only.. Well I think I am clear with my opinion, hope you understood my point..

i do agree with you with regards to saving the environment. e-books save lots of trees. i do not have a good eyesight though and strain on the eyes is also one of my concerns. thanks for your response.

I've personally never read an e-book, but it seems like a good idea for someone who doesn't have a lot of storage space, I agree though that it might not be as satisfying as being able to open up a new book with the crisp pages in your hands. Have you thought about donating or selling some of the books you already have? I never like to part with a book, but I generally let go of some of them here and there, either giving them to friends, selling them (on ebay, amazon, garage sales, or book stores that buy used books), or donating them to somewhere that will be able to use them. If you don't want to part with any of your books, I'd say e-books are a good alternative. You might as well give one a try and see how you like the experience.

I lend some of my books to my sisters and to my friends, and eventually the books will be returned to me (although some were not) Most of the books I have are hard to part with especially books of some authors that I collect (Harry Potter books and Mario Puzo books).

I completely understand. If I had enough space I'd eventually have enough books for a library :) But it sounds like e-books would be a good option for you. Even if it's not a paperback in your hands, you still get the great stories and writings.

If the choice must be made, the paperback is what I prefer. E-book means convenience and low cost while the paperback always inconveniet and with high price. But the paperback has its own strength that it can give us a feeling of content. Imagine you lying on the bed surrounded by piles of books, desklamp beside, that must be wonderful. In addition to it, I also love the smell of the paperback. The older the book is, the stronger the smell will be. Chinese always describe the clever as the person full of the smell of paperback. As a result, I had to say I prefer the paperback.

in my case, it seems e-book is more expensive. i live in the Philippines and the only way I could have an e-book is to buy from amazon.com and I have to pay in US dollars. with the paperbacks, we have a store here where they sell previously owned books at a cheaper price. And sometimes the books they sell don't even look like they were previously owned.

I forgot telling you that I am from China where the copyright is no so respected. Always I can download the free E-book online. Of course, I often pay for the E-books downloaded for showing my respect to the author. The stores selling the second-hand books can be seen around my city. You can find a wide range of magazines in these shops. You know, nowadays, most of the people enjoy the snack culture instead of the classics. Magazines are their favourite. It's hard to find the valuable book from such a store.

e-book is good concept wise and it does helps in storage. Even I find problems with preserving my classics. e-books is excellent that way. But, reading it gets to a hassle since I do not have an e-book reader. Also, I have a habit of reading bedtime stories which cannot really be feasible with my laptop. So, I prefer real book than virtual. However, having said this, once I buy the Kindle, which is very soon, you never know!

Oh how I wish I could also buy the Kindle soon! (or at least convince my husband to buy me one). It's so expensive. I have a few e-books that I read using my laptop and it's not comfy.

As a huge fan of e-book technology, I still don't think they'll ever 100% replace paper and ink. Physical books satisfy a tactile need in us that e-readers can't simulate. The scent, the feel, the weight of a book in the hand is a true comfort. And yet, I want also a nice stuff on my shelves. And I want to have at least SOME things that do not only exist on the internet or PC. I still also wanted to flip pages and lay back. And sometimes electronic machinery just reminds too much of my work, and I want to escape a bit with a decent book.. ;)

with many booklovers mentioning the sensation brought about by the scent of the pages of the book, i'm wondering if technology will soon be able to provide that satisfaction to e-book readers.

I have only read e-books on my computer. But I must say that it is very irritating to have to take my laptop with me everywhere to read the e-book. I know there are certain devices now like an E-reader but I don't have that. So that is why I prefer ordinairy books, so I can take them with me everywhere and read where I want to. It is also easier to lend a book to a friend.

we are on the same boat, i am also reading my e-books on my laptop. i can't afford to buy a Kindle yet but I think the Kindle makes it more comfortable to read the e-books.

I can't imagine using e-book, but that's just me. I know many people who use them and just love them. Do you have a friend who already has some sort of e-reader? See if they'll let you use it. You can see if you like it. If not, try to go someplace like Best Buy. They might have them on display, so you can play with it and see if you like it before you spend any money. I hope everything works out!

I have recently amassed large quantities of e-books, which I really do not have enough time to read. LOL. but for me there's nothing quite like turning the pages of a book. yes ebooks are good for storage space issues but nothing really beats holding a book.

I prefer standard book. I'm a book worm. But I'm a type who don't read much just buy books..lolz. What I don't like about e-books is that I'm not comfortable reading via electronic screen. I even print my emails if its long. I love to read and reread and hold books. Not a piece of electronics.

I also used to print e-books and I know it's silly because I need to consume lots of papers and expensive ink.

The old school paper back is still better for me. I can savor and grasp the story on a real book, it's as if I can really imagine the characters in the pages. E-books just don't work for me.

"me time" is the most important time of all especially for girls who are too busy. though i haven't tried reading a book yet in the bathroom , i always bring a book in my bag and read whenever i have an opportunity.

Staring at the computer screen causes a very bad case of eye pain and itchiness so I think I would go for paperback. Saves electricity too! :)

Hi bubbletush, I would prefer books over e-books. It is more comfortable to read a book then an e-book. You can read from the book anywhere. At you home, at the train or bus station or in the bus or train, at the lake side or anywhere you like. You can sit, eat or lean your back to the coach. You can take your time as long as you want. But you did not have this to read your e-book. You need to be in front of your computer.

You are so right! Books are so handy. And I am the kind of reader who would shift from one position to another, go to one place to another.

I bought an E-book reader four months ago. From such experience I could get the conclusion that E-book reader is a good device for those who really enjoy reading. When you travel by train or bus, you could choose hundreds of books on your E-book reader to read. If you carry paperback, your options will be limited. But it doesn't mean that E-book could completely replace paperback. Many people still enjoy the feeling of reading paperback, especially those famous books.

i like to have many ebooks. but in reality those are not very comfortable to me while reading. for study purpose i prefer first print them out and then read. or i prefer video tutorial for study and learn more and a bit easily. i think staring at monitor for long is really very bad and i cant read in this way.

If you'Re looking for space then i suggest you go for e-books. Paperbacks require light when you'Re reading while e-books don't. You can read them with the lights turned off. And it's easy to set a bookmark with e-books. It's your choice.

for me Ebook...as a traveller storage is a big problem..when I'm travelling I can only bring a minimum of 6 books 'coz of the weight in the baggage) while in e-books i can have 1,500 books :)
• Philippines

surely the books will not just share on the weight limit but will also take up some precious baggage space. e-book does fit your lifestyle.
