what is the difference between "confute" and "refute"?

I concur that the two words mean to disprove. My online dictionary also designates "confute" as being "formal" while "refute" would be a more common word to use for that meaning. "Refute" has the additional definition of "deny or contradict a statement or accusation."

I look the words in our dictionary, and it shows that it has the same meaning. Which is to prove to be false or incorrect. I hope that helps.
