Moomin is fine but how do you guys get your cats to take their meds?

Moomin is back to his normal, mad self. He has been on a course of antibiotics for a few days and it has been a real challenge getting him to take his tablets. I have tried hiding them in a small piece of chicken, crushed them into his cat food, even tried to pop them down his throat but every time it has been a real struggle. He figured out the crushed tablets trick fairly quickly, and turned his nose up at the food. The chicken trick worked a couple of times but only if I fed him that piece of chicken by hand and made sure he ate it. I attempted to get him to take the tablets the way the Vat showed me but that only resulted in a few fights and some scratched hands :-( So far hiding the tablet in the chicken worked the best, but when you know that you have to get the medication into the cat somehow, just how can you be sure that the tablet has been taken. I have had to resort to some mean tricks, strictly for his own good of course, including breaking the tablet into some tuna and making him wait until he was really hungry, just to guarantee that he would take his tablet. I think he has forgiven me for all the nasty tricks I had to pull though, he's back to being a happy cat, and currently chasing his toy mouse around the living room. The course of medication is over and he is definitely back to full health, but the next time I have to give him tablets, has anyone got any better ideas how to get a cat to take his tablets?

I am so glad that Moomin is fine it makes me so happy Cats are harder to give Tablets to then Dogs I mean the Tablet Gissi has does not have a scent so it is easy enough to give it to him in his Ham What I used to do with one of my Cats is crush the Tablet then hide it in the Chicken and she would take it but sometimes they can smell the Tablet I know Gissi does and he would rather Starve then eat anything with the Tablet in I can't shove it down his throat as he gets stressed and would bite me and then have fits So I do not know if you are crushing the Tablet before you hide it in the Chicken, if not try that Hugs

LOL If I tried to cram a tablet down Moomin's throat, I would end up with lacerated arms hun. He's far too quick with the claws when it comes to taking tablets.

Most of them I can tuck under an arm and cram away, but some I need the roomie to be holding to do the cramming!

yay moomin! i'm glad he's better. you got me.whenever i've had to give any of my cats meds,it was ON. short of wrapping them in a towel and hoping they don't get the claw of hate loose. grinding the pill up didn't work for this one cat..i swear he could sniff out 1 part in a million in the cat food.

I tried wrapping him into a towel the other day, with the idea that once he couldn't fight back he would swallow the tablet. Not a hope.

Hi Recycledgoth, I am happy that your kiddie is ok...I have 4 kiddies and it isn't easy...One of them, actually the next to the youngest, Diva has some type of stomache problem so it's meds, meds, and more meds...so I crush the pill and then mix it in a tiny bit of butter or peanut butter and then I spread the mixture on top of her paws...I think all kiddies like clean paws...so she licks them clean, whala...pill is in her system everytime!! Take care! ~G~

What a great idea, although I might put the crushed tablet into some chocolate custard, one of his favourites

I am glad Moomin is okay now. I used to always break up our animals meds and put it in their food. They did just fine. Some animals are smarter than others. I have never had an animal find their meds and not take them. Glad yours is back to normal behaviour and all. Antibiotics aren't fun for adults to take much less animals.

sometimes he will let me just pop it in at the side of his mouth and I hold his mouth shut till it is gone but mostly I will crush tablets with the back of a spoon until they are powder and then I just sprinkle them in to his food when he is hungry .

I managed to con him into taking some of the medication crushed up in his food but he always knows it's there - lol

I personally don't like to give my pets anything unnatural so I usually go online, I think there is a a website called earth clinic or something that helps with more natural remedies and there are heap of people online there that comment on whether these things have worked for them. I like to use the natural methods for my pets because it is better for them and also it is easier than making them take some pill.

I don't normally have to give Moomin any medication, this is the first time he's had to have antibiotics, to clear up a very nasty infection

It varies from cat to cat. One of ours will happily eat it if you tell him too and others sometimes it involves some wrestling. One will even hold it in his mouth, pretend to swallow it and wait until he thinks you aren't looking before he will swallow it.
