hvedra responded to a discussion called What have you read recently? in reading.
Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett which I really enjoyed. Interesting Times by Terry Pratchett The Last Continent by Terry Pratchett (can you see a theme here?) I've read them before but re-read them because they are so good. McCarthy's Bar by Pete McCarthy which was very good and very funny about a guy who is travelling around Ireland. I Used To Know That by Caroline Taggart a...

hvedra responded to a discussion called Is scrapping the: SATS in schools across England a good or bad idea?.
I think that the SATS are a very narrow way to test kids and that what you end up with is kids being "trained to pass exams" rather than actually learning anything. I've met kids who do well in SATS who would scare you with their lack of knowledge. A friend's daughter supposedly studied WWII last year for history but when asked "who were the nazis" and "who was Hitler" just shrugged and sai...

hvedra responded to a discussion called Will You Take Part in International Buy Nothing Day? in enjoy life.
I do but I have a lot of "Buy Nothing" days and even weeks. I think it is a good idea because it helps people focus on what they are buying and why. A lot of people shop for habit rather than something specific. I think in one survey they found that 30 per cent of people at the Mall had just gone there out of habit rather than to get something in particular. That's a bit scarey, there's ple...

Ask if you can glue a picture of a movie star across their face because if they aren't concentrating on you why should you concentrate on them?

hvedra responded to a discussion called What is your daily stress buster? in people.

I take the dog out for a walk - no phones or anything to disturb me - just me and him getting some exercise. I also like to do some sewing or something else creative with a bit of music in the background.

hvedra responded to a discussion called Do you enjoy doing the house work? in questions & answers.
It partly depends on what it is and my mood at the time. I can talk myself out of doing the ironing quite easily!I hate seeing a mess even though I'm quite untidy. It gets to a certain point and then I'll blitz things and have a mass throwing out of stuff. I do feel a lot better when it is tidy and everything is clean and because I stay at home it means that evenings and weekends are free f...

hvedra commented in a discussion called Did you enjoy school or hate it? in life.
My primary school was an old Victorian building which was really lovely but the secondary school was concrete and glass but, oddly, far more creepy. Perhaps because the primary school was nice and the secondary school just seemed to ferment hostility.

hvedra commented in a discussion called School Reunions: Good or Bad? in life.

I think school changes and becomes a lot more stressful as you get older. High school and it's equivalents are sometimes downright traumatic. I liked school up until I was about twelve when I got to Secondary School and it seemed all the social rules and attitudes did a complete 180 for no apparent reason I've ever been able to fathom.

hvedra commented in a discussion called Women leaves her four kids under five home alone for 24 hours in family.
I said "I know it isn't the case .... but it sometimes it does seem that way". I didn't say MOTHERS either, I said ANYONE. Some people read "This is the case.... it is that way". or possibly "any mother under 25 is eeeeviiiiilllll!" Weird.

hvedra commented in a discussion called Too many vampires? in reading.

That kind of things sucks. We have a show over here called University Challenge where college teams answer all kinds of questions against each other. The other week there were a question about "Chocolat" by Joanne Harris (good read, get yourself a copy) and the guy on the team who THOUGHT he knew the answers had obviously only seen the film - which is why he got the answers wrong! Ha ha!One...

School Reunions: Good or Bad?

Too many vampires?

Are there too many vampire novels out there? While there are some good ones is it sometimes a case of people trying to cash in with some not very original or good writing as well - so you end up with...
