news says the show had had the lowest ratings ever since they started. was it because paula was gone or ellen de generes was a bad choice for a judge or the format of the show is already predictable coupled with favorite contestants losing thus leaving?

I think it may be a little of each reason you listed. Plus the fact that the show is now in the 9th or 10 season. I wasn't going to watch after they got rid of Paula but then when I heard it was Ellen taking her place I had to watch. I'm a big Ellen fan so this is why I'm still watching. Now next season when Simon is gone I think the show is going to go down the tubes completely. Everyone will be watching X-Factor with Simon.

i had never been a true follower of american idol but i do try to watch it everytime i would encounter it in the cable. the it factor was gone after paula left and yes, i can attest that it was the lackluster contestants plus the predictability of the show's format. this time that ellen is around i still try to watch it but...am a huge ellen fan but she isn't a good judge and the contestants aren't that worth following anymore.

I think Ellen is a good judge. She is judging like one of us as a viewer. Not knowing the technical part of it that is the only way she can judge. I think she has been great and very funny.

The thing that makes Ellen a great judge is that she is a huge music fan. She knows all the lyrics of all the songs she dances to on her show, and she is on top of the latest on music and pop culture. I'm sad to see Simon go; he's already begun to settle into American culture. Sure, it's taken him some 9-10 years, but he's always been my favorite.

Nothing is new with it, I think that is what's wrong about it. The show is predictable. The only changes are the faces of the contestants.

seems like american idol's creative team is not that effective.

Hi, I don't watch American Idol like I used to because I find that the contestants are boring. They do not have the X-factor that previous American Idol had. Now I can't find even one contestant who has that charisma, and some of them seem to sing without emotion, and this is very boring to me. And yeah.. I miss Paula too, and the show is already predictable and I think they should really find contestants who can show a Wow factor. Last season's not bad, this season is very boring.

maybe great singers like the previous winners are still in the making. you know, still too young for the contest. i don't believe a program can turn out great winners year after year. but i guess it's either conduct the contest every other year or expect low ratings due to no wow factor of the contestants.

I just don't like the people that the judges have already deemed as being winners - such as Crystal. I stopped watching b/c I was so tired of the judges acting like Crystal was this huge talent when I really don't care for her music. I wish the judges would be more fair and balanced and not openly name who they think should win because I think that makes the audience bias. I wonder if Crystal would still be around if Simon wasn't praising her so much.

People have said that some of the better contestants were let go too early, like Lilly Scott, I believe her name was. But overall, critics say the talent pool is less. Add the fact that Ellen isn't exactly a superb critic (although a wonderfully pleasant person), and Dancing with the Stars is its direct competition, and there is a problem. Dancing with the Stars had I think the highest rated season this time around. The cast was very popular. So it hurt American Idol. I just hope Crystal Bowersox wins. I think she's the best of the ones left.

up to know i don't know why they put ellen degeneres there unless they are really forseeing low ratings due to paula's absence. but you cannot put a price on expertise and bargain it with a pleasing personality.

It's not because of the judges, I think. Ellen is doing a great job and she seems to be perfect for the job, since she brings a perspective from a tv viewer to the judging panel. Kara however has turned into the new Paula. I'm sad that Simon is leaving: he's already gotten into settling in with the American culture and I think America has learned to listen more. The season started off with a great audition portion. They were able to combine people's stories with ease and without milking their life stories too much. They also featured interesting auditions without showing too much of the "weirdos." This would have been great if the contestants they picked went up a notch from there. A lot of good contestants were let off too early and by the time the final 24 came out, most of them were too comfortable and weren't as great as when they first auditioned. I think what last season had that this season didn't was a strong story for most contestants. Danny Gokey was challenged with being a sob-story about his wife, but surpassed that typecast. The Puerto Rican contestant was interesting and I was sad to see him go. This season, the only exciting contestant with an interesting story was Mike Lynche, who was auditioning while his wife was in labor. Maybe Idol was being too respective of people's privacy this year? Surely, they can do that with taste anyway?

thank you for that very detailed response. but, that's still not it for me. i think people just grew tired of the format and with things changing there when it comes to the judges and the "toning" down of the marketing team this did not do good to get the viewers' attention. when the rival show dancing with the stars have many "colorful" contestants one cannot go from loud marketing to trying to tone it down. thanks for posting.

they have two new judges now. jenifer lopez and steven tyler. i am glad they brought the judges down to three. the idea of 4 judges was boring. we shall see where the show will go from here. i have been a fan and will watch it. i am waiting for the x factor with simon cowell. he has made some good shows so i think this will be a good one, too.

This is the first that I have heard of that, but you know what I kind of saw that happening. I think that it had nothing too much to do with Paula going home because I'm pretty sure that a few people have dropped out of watching American Idol, but I think personally that Ellen is not that bad of a judge for people to stop watching. She was a great judge. Anyways, what I think is the main reason, is that people are tired of people who are winning winning. It seems like the same type of musical people are winning. None of the really great people seem to be winning. So it gets to the point were people are like what is the point of watching American Idol, to see the only same type of people winning. So, some people just give up on watching it. Now this year I have even given up on voting, because it seems to be my votes never work anyway. I know next year and this is my prediction for next year that more people will not be watching American Idol and I will be amongst one of those people. The reason I say that is because, Simon is leaving. I kind of knew he'd leave, just wasn't sure. You know what maybe eventually American Idol will go off the air. But who knows, we'll have to see.
