A hospital error but, is this the way to go?

This story tells of an 8 year old girl being taken to a hospital (which is a walk-in centre for minor injuries) & sent home after a missed fracture. After a week of her daughter being in constant pain, crying and being unable to eat properly, the mother took her to the A&E dept (ER) where the child was x-rayed and found to have a broken ankle. What would you do if you'd been the mother? Would you be ranting and threatening to sue now or might you have considered getting a second opinion much sooner? Also, isnt the picture a bit sensationalist & sympathy seeking? Dont get me wrong, I feel very sorry for the little girl and, in an ideal world, the fracture would have been spotted and dealt with in the first instance. http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/news/Mum-s-fury-nurse-misses-broken-ankle/article-2151123-detail/article.html This is in the UK and the girl was dealt with under the NHS so its not a question of any health professional gaining financially or any monetary cost to the family.

Hiya Wizzy, If that was my child I would have taken her elsewhere for a second opinion. Which I was often forced to do and not because I wanted to. Once I fell in the playground and fell flat onto my right hand. At first it did not hurt that much by next Day and a sleepless night through the pain I was taken to the local Hospital. The Doctor grabbed my wrist and the tears sprang to my eyes. He said surely it can´t hurt that much. Okay and X-ray I´m sure there´s nothing wrong. So they did an x-ray and I had the whole bone and tendon of my thumb out of place way out of place. So you see those things happen. But like you say it´s just a genuine mistake on their behalf and it happens many times even in the best of Hospitals. A Doctor caused my eldest Son to become intoxicated with an overdose of injections he gave me for his Bronchitis. He became sick could not keep food down and lost weight. So in the end after about two weeks of going back to the Hospital time and time again because I was getting a bit frantic and the bad treatment they were giving me for insisting so much. So they sent me to a specialist but for that I had to go back to the same Doctor that had started all this off. Well I won´t say what happened after there was a bit of a to do just because I had gone back again. Undaunted I strolled through the Door of his Surgery and I said I was not going out till he wrote me out a form for a blood analysis. Unwillingly and still saying there was nothing wrong with my Son who was still being sick and losing weight he gave me the form to go the same Day to the Hospital. I still had to wait another heart wrenching week because in all this time I had very little sleep at any time and I was worn out trying to get him to eat and drink water and keep him down him. Eventually when I went back for the result of the analysis he just told me that he had been intoxicated by an overdose of Antibiotics in the injections. The injections that were given to him were way too strong for his age. On top of that he just shrugged his shoulders and I was to say the least a bit gobsmacked as they offered no apology or any further treatment or even to say how long the symptoms would last nothing. Do you think I should have made a complaint? If I had felt strong enough maybe I would. But it would not have got me anywhere and I was so relieved that my Son was alive and would be okay. He did get over it but only with my persistence. From then on it made me very wary of Doctors specially the Children´s ones that you put the whole of your faith in.

Hiya Wizz, Sorry don´t mean to give you "second helpings" all these Doctors whom I have been telling you about here the children´s ones were here in Spain. The incident about my hand happened in Wolverhampton "somewhere".

I think you had grounds for complaint in both instances and, nowadays there would probably be a hefty compensation payment. However, people were more concerned with getting their children treated than chanelling money away from health authorities into their own pockets. One of our senior nurse tried to persuade an old lady to change her nightdress before visiting time but, she refused and became distressed. The relatives arrived and were (understandably) annoyed. The situation was explained to them and the old lady still declined a clean nightie - but, the relatives went ahead and made a formal complaint. On the other side of the coin, a young lad was given an incorrect dosage of something elsewhere in the same hospital. He became very ill and was unable to co-ordinate, speak or feed himself for a number of weeks. Fortunately, the effects were partly temporary so, although he is not back to his former self, he has been given back a reasonable quality of life. He and his parents were advised that they had a case but, they not only declined to make a formal complaint, they wrote a lovely thank you letter to the staff of the ward he was transferred to following the incident. They said it had been an unfortunate error and a desperately distressing time for all of them but, it was over and they were grateful for the care he received. (This was not at either of the hospitals mentioned in the report above)

Hiya Wizz, The one about the elderly lady is a bit well what could I say a bit of a silly one. Well not silly but to put a complaint in I would not have done. They looked after my Mom with the very restricted conditions they had and I was very thankful to them. I wrote them a letter of gratitude as well. Good to see that the young lad will recover too. I don´t think many overworked Doctors mean to do what they do it´s because they are so flaming well tired and overworked. But this Spanish Doctor I was telling you about was the reverse. He had a Surgery yes but he had plenty of time and all he ever did was to write prescriptions without hardly ever examining the Child itself and this is what happened to my eldest Son. The only side effect of all that was it yellowed his bottom teeth a bit and he had them treated a long time after that. But if I had not insisted with the Doctors I don´t where he would be today. Here I was grateful for my Son being alive and well however it did´nt come out of me to say that I was grateful because every time I went there I only received a hostile attitude from them. I could verify this if I wanted to it actually happened but it´s all water under the bridge now and I have forgiven it and let it go. Have to say that unlike the hostile attitude of those involved with treating my Son all the other Doctors I have met up with were the complete opposite except for the odd one or two and you always get them everywhere don´t you?

I think it is a shame that it happened but mistakes do happen. I would have gone to the doctor sooner. The medical personnel can only do so much with what you tell them...

Yes, the little girl is the one who has suffered here but, I think the mother must hold herself partly responsible for the delay in getting the correct treatment.

of course normally the mother will get angry because she thinks that that hospital is not doing proper treatment for clients. but depending on the reason if those incharge during those times mis interpreted something or did miss anything. if not, then they should be sued.

IMHO there are far too many people whose first thought is to sue and gain financial reward in any possible situation. The nurse, as a human being, made an error. This cause suffering to a child which is clearly wrong but, is giving the mother a large sum of money going to undo that child's suffering? Perhaps the second hospital should sue the mother for her delay in seeking a second opinion - which clearly prolonged the childs suffering. Since both hospitals are funded by the same Trust, no money need exchange hands.

I do think the mother should have gone to a bigger and a better hospital. Since this case happened in the UK, money problems would not have been any concern. A delay in treatment of one week could threaten the life of a patient. I am a Medical Technologist by profession and once aspired to become a doctor. I know what happens inside a hospital, there are so many cases that are hidden from the people's eyes. One hospital personnel's opinion can vary greatly from another one's opinion although they work in the same field. So a second opinion is always important, especially if you have a doubt.

Mistakes like this shouldn't happen but, medical staff are human and as such will make errors. I feel sorry for the child who was obviously in pain and then had a mother who has sensationalised the incident in the press.
