Do you have a bank account with the same bank or do you change your bank often?

Hi friends, Have you changed your bank accounts or do you have an account with the same bank since the beginning... In my case I had an account with a nationalised bank right from my student days and I continued to have it even after I got married and had 2 children. When ATM was introduced to India I was told that my bank was not planning to have the facility anywhere in the near future.I was keen on having an ATM a/c and opened another a/c with a private bank close to my house.I also closed my old account.A year later the old bank also came up with ATM facility and in India one finds it much more convenient to have a bank a/c with any of the nationalised banks since their charges are minimal, and to pay various bills pertaining to govt services. One of my friends requested me to open an account in her branch which I did , so I again had an account with the same bank. Later I had 2 more accounts opened at different banks at different times and also closed one of them...My mother who has had her 2 Savings Bank accounts with the same bank for the past 50 years is amazed that I change bank accounts so easily lol... What about you all friends? do you have the same account that you had right at the beginning or have you changed them ? if so how often?

Hi, why dont you have any interest in ATM yugasini? Is it not convenient to do your money transactions? I agree it was much easier to open accounts earlier and also there was no need to keep a large amount of minimum deposit. Now many banks insist on Rs 5000/- and if yiu go below the limit even for 25% of the days in a quarter they charge Rs 700 as penalty, so your money is stuck there...

I know yugasini, just imagine, if you have 3 or 4 accounts in private banks nearly 15 -20,000 rupees are stuck there.I feel that nationalised banks are much better that way. They insist on Rs 1000 in metro and capital cities and Rs 500 for other cities, which is much better...

Basically u need the services of a bank, nowadays as there might be a need to get a loan in future,,,,,,and of course to keep ur money safe,as long as u get what u want ur account to do for u, one or two bank accounts should be enough,I get discouraged when the senior staff shows that they don't care,,,,Thanks God I do not hate them,I say two banks as it is not advisable to put all ur eggs in ONE basket

Hi kawalnarang, where were you all these days....long time no see. I too agree with your logic that we dont really need too many bank accounts.I too have 2 accounts and an old post office account which I started because the post master was a family friend.Surprisingly , I notice that we get the maximum benefit from there. The interest rate is higher and the service is very good, so what more can one want? - all the best kawalnarang and have a nice evening

Hi Kiran ! I have had different bank accounts and though my first preference is to a private bank this was not my first account. It was at a nationalised bank.Later i closed this. Now after relocating to another place the question naturally changes. My select old accounts have been transferred, new accounts ahve been opened and this is the compulsion of change. If I had been in the same place I may not have had the need to change but I have no hesitation in doing it because I did close the nationalsied bank account even when I was there. THere was another nationalsied bank account that I had, closed and then reopened again[like what you did] for different reasons like a change in the bank location and locker facility etc.., So there is no hard an d fast rule.I would do it if it is convenient or situation demands this.

Yes exactly kala, but the older generation thinks differently. My grand father had an account with the post office and the SBI and thats it, there was no question of either changing them nor did he think of closing them either ...But now there are no hard and fast rules and rigid thinking like it used to be, I feel we have to be flexible about such things right ? Did it rain there kala? I am in Bangalore for a short holiday and it is nice with lots of rains and the weather is cool and lovely, such a change from th sweltering heat of Mangalore..

Hi cloud, thanks a lot for your response I understand ...In my case , at one stage I had 7 accounts and it was difficult to manage and remember all the passwords for the different ATM cards. So now I have closed most of them and retained just 2 accounts and it is much easier this way, one never knows about the future though all the best

Once you reach your payout you will start having money to save. It is only through hard work that we get to earn here and I am sure that you too will be able to do so in the coming months - all the best to you and happy mylotting
