Don't get me wrong my fellow myLotters, Its not right/good to feel this way but its really true. I feel so much bored for a speaker rendering a long speech. Since my childhood I can't stand longer to listen and pay attention in a long speech. How long should a speaker deliver his/her speech? In my point of view 20-45 minutes of speech is just fine for me and still very much alive and alert to listen, but longer than that I can't stay and don't expect that I can still understand what his speech is all about! Every time I'm listening a long speech I feel I want to nap in the middle and keep yawning .lol .He/she trying to send me to sleep. In this case I also avoid myself delivering a long speech as I'm afraid somebody will felt asleep or yawning in the middle of my words. How about you my fellow myLotters? Do you feel the same too? Or you are likely to be a good listener and very alert clapping hands when needed,.lol.What you usually do when you feel bored in a long speech? I'd love to hear from you my fellow mylotters? Thank you and Have a nice day!

Hi prety best: When I was at school it happends to me in some cases when I don't like the subject but at the same time I enjoy the Human science and Political areas, they're so fascinating to me. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day. ALVARO.

Hi Cloud, I think for me it is more about the speaker and the content of the speech as to whether or not I stay awake or snooze rather than the length of it. I have listened to some really good speakers that are so fascinating and witty that I could have listened for 2 hours and not gotten a bit bored. More often than not though I'll start to day dream after about a half hour and it won't be long before I'm hiding behind my hair and sleeping. I remember in highschool, History was my sleeping class. I couldn't stand it. I actually did like learning about history but the teacher was just so boring and unenthusiastic that I could not stay awake.

I think 20 minutes is enough. I am with you I dont like long ones. I have a short attention span, so they would lose me after 20 minutes. a great quote about giving speeches - Be sincere, be brief, be seated." – Franklin D Roosevelt.

Hi cloud, how have you been ? You have mastered the art of starting the right kind of discussions that many members seem to like and respond to Coming to your topic - honestly I hate long speeches even if they are interesting. I feel that one should not go beyond 15 minutes, short and crisp! I remember my old college professor who would go on and on about every single matter on this earth which none of us would follow, but we had to sit and pretend as if it was enlightening - all the best cloud and happy mylotting

Yeah, it's not right but it's really boring. During my school days, we often have to sit in for speeches delivered by some well-known figures weekly and often, I have no idea what he/she is trying to present to me because it takes me like 5 mins before I start to drift off to my own world, only to be drag back when my leg started to cramp. And that's the torturing part, trying to concentrate on something I don't have interest in. I think a 15~30 mins speech is okay with some colorful slides combined with animation etc. But anything more than 1 hour, unless it's really interesting, else I would rather the presenter have the session with the teachers and staffs because they often have a Q&A session at the end and it's always them to ask. The only time I clapped, was when they finally say "Thank you."

Hi there Cloud 31! Well, the length doesn't matter to me as long as what the speaker is saying, is interesting and the place and situation is conducive for listening. I can't really listen to long speeches if it's too hot, too noisy, too crowded, when I'm hungry or preoccupied. I think that is normal for everyone else to feel that way. As for my speeches, I always try to keep them short and inject humor into it whenever I can to make sure that I get the attention of the listeners. A good but too long speech won't have the same effect with a good and short one since most people would be listening to it. If they won't listen to full speech, no matter what the contents are, you will have a hard time getting your message across.

Same here. I too cannot analyze things which are too boring for me. Specially if the speech is too long and that too on something which I am least interested in. There are times when I have to listen to such long speeches in get together parties and functions where old people meet and start blabbering about their days I find it very boring since I cannot relate to anything that they say.

I hate long speeches as well especially if the speaker does not have the skills to capture and hold the attention of his listners. I do not think its bad to feel like this. Its just a natural reaction. People given the task top deliver a speech must try to bear in mind the audience to which they will be delivering and try to make their presentation as interesting as possible. I have not lost my childhood dislike for long boring speeches. I have sat through long speeches before without even being aware of the length of the speech and not even wanting to get up and go take a nice breather. Thats the effect of a good speaker. I usually fall asleep or find something to am use me and the all time favourite, go take a breather. I get angry when I am bored to the point of falling asleep during a presentation. Its not easy to be a speaker but the reaction of the audience is real.

Yes I too have sometimes attended speeches without knowing the time they will take. Once I attended a onsite call, this is not exactly a speech but a meeting kind of thing on phone like a conference, from US and they were discussing some things about a project which were out of this world for me, I was not getting even a single thing but I was asked to attend it and so I did, half of the time I was not paying attention and going through my mails on my PC while the call was on.

I too feel very sleepy if the speech is regarding some topic which is very boring for me. I don't pay attention at all. I first start looking at other people if they are awake and listening as well. When I see that most of them are not paying attention and are lost in their own world, I too start getting drowsy and soon fall asleep with my eyes open, that is I start day dreaming. I yawn at times as well but cover my mouth so that the speaker doesnt notice how bored I am with his/her speech. I do nod and shake my head in agreement or disagreement when I see my fellow members doing it but actually I am not listening at all. I do those actions in sub-conscious mind. I pretend to laugh at their silly jokes also, because if I don't then people will think that I am too stupid to understand jokes inatantly. I don't want them to feel that way and get satisfaction that they are smarties

Well sometimes i felt that way too,but for me it does not matter as long as it is interesting and the speaker also delivered it very well profound. I guess it depends on the listener, if he really wanted to hear what to speaker wanted to impart.

Yes you are right,it also about how the speaker delivered her/his speech. And how the listener will take part of the speech. I guess Its just about the topics, speaker and the audience. Happy mylotting!

About me, I can't listen more than 5 minutes a speech if it's not interesting, or if it's not related with something that concern me. The chance to yawn to begin to yawn is 99%. However, If the case is different I stand more. Maybe an hour and that's it.

I hate long speeches. I think that speeches should never exceed 30 minutes, the speaker himself would ask some audience participation or do any ice breaker. I listen to speeches though. I'm quite a good listener and often times I'm amazed by how others convey what they want to share with the crowd. It takes a lot of bravery to stand up in a crowd and I respect them by listening intently to whatever they have to say 'cause if I would be doing the speech, I would want to have my audience listen to what I have to say and hopefully retain some of my points in their mind. But definitely, the place, occasion and even time of day affects my tolerance for boring speeches. A good speaker can always make a boring topic interesting and enjoyable to a given crowd.

I'm feel the same, long speeches more than 30 minutes are really boring especially with a speaker who doesn't know how to shorten the story and even no sense of humor. I must say I felt bored with a speaker who doesn't render the speech well. Thank you for having you here.Sorry for the delay of the response as well.

Yes, I do feel the same way at certain instances. If the speaker is just reading and not really delivering a speech, it becomes boring. As much as I want to show respect to the speaker, feeling sleepy can't really be helped. But if the speaker is expounding on a very interesting topic and can catch the attention of the audience, it is the other way around. I get interested and puts my attention to the speaker.

That's right, bored and sleepy, though of course we want to make a good impression as a good listener we can't helped but to feel much irritated. I hope I can have much more patience though! Interesting topic would be great but if its really long it gets me bored as well . Thanks for your response and happy mylotting!

For me, it depends on the speaker and the topic itself. If the topic is interesting and the speaker knows how to handle the speech and that he always catch everyone's attention then I dont have any problem listening to a long speeches.

You have pointed out a real fact. Long speech, specially if the speaker delver ordinary speech really a very boring. Any one can delivers a boring speech. It is a art to be a good speaker. Listening an ordinary long speech is one kind of punishment. There is a joke regarding this. A ordinary poet always annoys his fried circle reciting his ordinary poem. To avoid this boring situation all of his friend always try to avoid him. But the poet find out them and spoil the situation. So they find out a solution for this. One friend ask other one a question..... What is the toughest task for him? The poet answered.. life imprisonment. Another friend answered ... Listening poem. The poet question even then the imprisonment? The other answered.... Life imprisonment is relief from him from listening poem. From that day friends are relief from ordinary poem. I am not a good listener. Basically if the speaker deliver the speech where most portion is known to me already then it is like a punishment for me. But attractive speech has magic power to bind the listener. But all speaker have not that quality of speech delivery.

A 15-20-minute speech is long enough. That leaves 10 minutes for questions/answers and you're done. Some of our Presidents need to learn that lesson.

for me, if the speaker talks for more 1hour, i would really be irritated because i'm the type of person who couldn't stay long in one place. even if i'm sitting, i feel so uncomfortable, but i can't do anything for it is too rude or disrespectful if i stand while the speaker is still talking.

Hello chuacx, That's normal to feel irritated, as well feeling uncomfortable but of course we can't show that to the speaker even how uneasy we are we still sit still and that make more irritable. anyway 1 hour is really too long for a speech! Thank you for sharing and Happy myLotting!
