As the first World Cup in the continent of Africa all eyes will be on the performance of the African teams. Till date in any continent the world cup has been won by a nation from that continent or Brazil? Do you think any African nation can go all the way? I think Ivory Coast and Ghana would be the two African teams to watch, but both are in difficult groups and Ghana would be without Essien. What is your take on this? Cheers! Ram

Hmm good question to debate on ram... i too have a feeling an african nation can atleast reach the semi-s... drogba and eto'o r in fine form this season and will play an imp hand (like roger milla)... i feel either the ivory coast or the indomitable lions will make it.. nigeria and ghana are way too weak.. egypt has a very good chance depending on zidan their playmaker..

agree with you about ivory coast. was actually reading up on the world cup trying to figure out what bets to make, what teams to bet on or what teams to fade. also been looking around for any prop bets that i can hit for an easy win (i know there are no easy wins. lol!). i really think ivory coast makes a mark this year. what's good to note about these african teams is that they can score an upset over the favorites but these teams are prone to upsets as well to teams that i think they can easily beat. anyway, i think drogba with all his scoring prowess can win a couple of games for ivory coast but he cannot win all of these. home court advantage will bode well for these teams but again, playing in front of a friendly crowd isn't enough to win games in the world cup. this isn't the nba where homer calls are the rule rather than the exception. hahaha!!! so yeah, i think ivory coast finishes second in their group next to brazil. i really think ivory coast sneaks past portugal. after that, doubt if they can make it further. ghana... i'm completely writing off. i could be wrong, won't be the first time, but i think germany and serbia ends up 1st and 2nd respectively in group d. not saying that ghana won't win any games but they won't win enough games to make it to the round of 16.

just to add to this. i think south africa goes into the group of 16. in the history of the world cup, the host team has always made it past the initial stage and made it to the group of 16.

My guess would be Ivory Coast. Drogba is in the form of his life, and I think few defenders in the world can handle him. Physically he will be a pain in the defense, and his pace and skill, not to mention his explosive finishing are top class. Any small mistake, and I am sure he will take advantage of it. It may seem like a one-man team, but I think it will be enough. I believe Erikson will build a team around Drogba to support him.
