I am confused. This site is for discussions but what if these discussions are converted to chats which is what I see is happening to most of the discussions that the subject of the discussion is totally forgotten. Your views please.

Hi allknowing, Though we get confused about this matter, i am enjoying their chat too since it is open discussion and chat. I think this is the only site where you can exchange or share views in a funny way. Happy mylotting.

Sometimes the discussions start with a bang and end up with a whimper. It is the plaintive whining way, which we see at the end of the discussion, which changes the heated discussion into a chat. It is quite normal. Whenever, I see a discussion changing into a chat I know it is time to end the discussion.

In other words let there be freedom the way users express themselves here a digression here and there should be ignored and not reported as abuse. That was my point and you have understood it perfectly.

Are you saying that you think it's abuse after the person responds on a discussion and then it starts going back and forth with other chatting?

Hi beani, Going off the topic and not getting back could quite be taken as abuse as the one who has initiated the discussion would be left high and dry. What do you think? There are discussions here that have taken such a turn and reporting abuse and even not earning anything for these efforts is all, as you know, done under wraps and so one never knows. This is just my hunch. Most here want to earn and not getting paid for all the fun and frolic could be a thought to ponder! What say?

What defines 'chat'? Is it the length of the sentences? Is it the words or the text style used instead of uisng English? Some of the topics posted are, in my opinion, 'chat' before they even have a response! When a user posts a one line topic stating 'I want u to tell me abt ur day' (or whatever else) THAT is chat and not English If the first response that a user leaves then later grows into lengthy shorter backwards and forwards comments, even though some of them may have no bearing on the main topic, surely it is the natural outcome of a conversation and is furthering the topic just as we are told to do in the FAQs? Surely we are not at school? We are told to have fun (and even flirt) and as those discussions with the long comments are not deleted unless the topic itself is a violation, surely it is correct to assume that myLot are happy with them? Isn't a discussion also a debate or a conversation or a chat?

I went through the guidelines and found this: "Please use myLot messages to chat back and forth with your myLot friends. Make plans for the weekend, schedule a time to meet for fun, or just talk about what happened today at work! If you would like to know more about a certain myLot member, request them as a friend." I also found this "Please make sure you give your best effort to respond with quality responses. If you don’t know how to respond to a discussion, go on to the next one. ......." As I have always told you Diana I am vary of doing so many things here because I see ambiguity and admire you guys when you do it with gay abandon.

Oh I am absolutely aware that we should not use the discussion area for arranging personal stuff and that we should do that in PMs but if you have the time to read through some of those long chains in the response boxes you will see that they follow the topic and do not get into offline stuff. Sometimes they 'wander' but are still within the topic itself because the topic left wide open spaces to be covered - and surely that is what a quality discussion is about? When the Lotter who starts one of those manages to create a topic which can be discussed at 369*° then they have made a brilliant topic have they not? In the FAQs we are told this: 'Use myLot, post discussions, respond to discussions, comment on discussions, or perform searches. Post quality content. For example, generate discussions that engage other users and provide insightful responses and comments to other users discussions to further the topic' http://www.mylot.com/o/faq/faq6.aspx#14 Nowhere are we told to just post questions and answers because that is not what myLot is about. As long as the comments are NOT in chat or text-style language and are not deleted by admin, then we can assume that we are doing what myLot was created for methinks Maybe not all of our comments are earning for us in some of those long chains or maybe they are. Only admin knows. Those of us who participate in them know too. It is also true that not all Lotters are here exclusively for the earnings

Yeah. I also noticed that. I am about to start a discussion about that, good thing you started it. I noticed some MyLot veterans when they get together in a discussion, about 2 to 3 of them meet in a discussion, they come to dominate it with their "Hi, hello, where have you been, what time you wake up, jokes, laughs and other chat words".

Just my 2 cents on this, but my face to face discussions/conversations or telephone discussions/conversations always start off talking about one thing, but end up on so many other topics from just one discussion/conversation. I would only say it was a problem if the first response in the box has nothing to do with the discussion, all the other comments in the box are how discussions/conversations evolve. It's what makes things interesting. So in my opinion PA, I think that so long as the first response in the box is on topic then the rest is just how natural discussions evolve.

Magtibaygom, you asked something similar to this on one of my discussions, and I gave you my response. Do you ever go back and read responses to your comments? Do you ever try to further discussions by replying back and forth or do you think that a discussion or conversation is done when each person says one thing? Isn't a discussion/conversation a back and forth interaction between two or more people? By the way, your question in my discussion was technically off-topic, too, but it did not stop you from asking it nor did it stop me from giving you a perfectly valid response, in my opinion. If off-topic comments and remarks are taboo, though, then wouldn't that mean that we were engaging in "chat" So, are there rules as to when it is and is not alright to veer off the topic then, in your opinion?

Hi allknowingly. I have seen many topics start discussion on serious subject and when comments and re-comments get on added it slowly looses seriousness and get converted into personal chat type environment. I feel in any such forum this is likely to happen. One has to decide how long to contribute a discussion, depending on his/her own mental set up.

That is the culture of any forum and once we know that this is how a discussion turns out finally calling it a 'discussion' forum and wondering whether one is doing it right can be avoided.

Its obvious for all the posters here to get dragged away from the main topic since one thought gives rise to thousands of other thoughts and whatever thought is dominant at that time in the poster's mind, that is going to get written here. You might have noticed even when we discuss within our friends or family circle, many a times the main topic is left way behind and we are discussing on something else. As for me, I don't think its a problem and take it as natural.

That sums it up so well manojt! If you are involved in a discussion then more thoughts will come each time a new comment is added by someone else and it just progresses. That is what a discussion is all anout surely? That is where the discussion then becomes interesting too.

Mylot is about having fun, not being worried about others is not going to get you far here. Playing together then everyone wins, and your earnings would reflect it also. Good luck!

I feel guilty of this too. But what to do dear. It can't be avoided sometimes, when one friend started to give response and other friends commented back so it looks like a chatting window. I find it having fun sometimes, since,it's one reason that keep mylotters active and alive.

I am absolutely guilty of going off-topic in discussions here and also in the offline world. Sometimes it is on discussions that other people start, and sometimes it is on my own discussions. If someone starts down a path on a discussion that I have started and it is one that I never expected it to take, I will willingly go along for the ride and see where the discussion leads. I definitely do not think it is a bad thing, especially since I might not think it is related to my original discussion when we start on the journey, but when we end up at our destination I might have changed my mind. If not, then at least I will have enjoyed the scenery along the way.

@ allknowing, the more the merrier! Just jump in a box and start talking and see where it goes. The discussion only progress with more comments dropped in the boxes.

Allknowing why not think of a discussion as though it was a room full of people talking. If you heard something said and you wanted to say something of your own then surely you would do so. Why not do it here too? You might even enjoy it Beanie is correct. We are told to further the topic and that is what happens in all those boxes where you see those long exchanges.

In forums these things happen but if these kind of responses are reported would they be considered as violations? Or would they earn anything at all? Because some of you I see are enjoying the ride but those like me try to be cautious which caution may not be really necessary. Would love to join the bandwagon you see!

its alright as long as its still discussion though we all know that mylot only have limit when it comes to paying our post, so if it becomes a chat like a personal exchange post then they will not get paid for that though members do that to express their thought about the person, its one form of enjoying being here in mylot.

Can you please link me to something by myLot which informs that 'discussions which look like chat don't get paid'? MyLot pay for quality and many of those discussions are really hammering away at the maib topic though this can only be seen by reading all of the comments backwards and forth in the long boxes. I have been doing this for years. One of the exchanges I had with a user 18 months ago reached over 100 comments in the same box and went on for months and I can assure you that our earnings were not affected. If we continue to use English and not text style then where is the violation?

I was just commenting on what homeshoppers was saying. Anyway if intitiating a discussion has limitations may be then the responses could also have limitations if they have nothing to do with the discussion concerned. I am asking you.

But those who come here for making money know that discussions that look like 'chats' don't get paid?
