Today when I got free time in my office..I thought of browsing some stuff. But when I entered Google.com it showed the site is blocked something like that..I know in some offices they won't allow to check personal mails but I never know they block Google search too..Then I asked my colleague, why they blocked Google. Then she said Yes we can't access any site..Only company website will be loaded or sify can be accessed..Then I said myself "there is no way of accessing mylot too" If I tried anything then it will be a black mark on me..Since I'm a new comer to the office I have to get good remarks..But I just don't know why they blocked Google search..? That is very bad.. Whether you too in same situation or you can access all sites in your office..?

When I was working (2001-2006) I did browse when not busy. I was able to get to most sitess that I used. I emailed people and had all sorts of fun. Within reason ofcourse. It just depends on how your company sets it all up. Ours changed all the time. They could watch us too and yet I never got a talking to about it nor was it ever mentioned in my work discussions with my boss.

It was a good company, for the most part, to work for.

Hello Gany. Well it is a good thing as a lot of people surf the net, while at work. A lot of companies here did it as well. Maybe you should just leave it and do your work. We don't want to get into any trouble, do we? TATA.

There are many ways. Among that using proxy is the best way. There are tons of proxy sites through which you can access any content. You must be smart enough to know about your company's network. Since you are a newbie to the company, I suggest you not to try those. Be good to the BOSS buddy! :D

This is not good--not company policy but your wishing to access non-work sites. They are renting your time and you promised, when you took the job, to sell them your time in exchange for payment. You have no business doing anything but job-related things on the computer or the phone. Use this an an opportunity to give your all to the job. Be enthusiastic and think of how you can give them the best bargain since they are buying your time and your brains. You will advance much more quickly than if you were surfing the net or texting/talking several times a day.

in my office, i allow everyone to access anything they like. as long as it's nothing criminal, i don't mind they can surf, but they need to get their assigned work done first

Companies normally blocked employees from accessing the outside world, sometimes even email is prohibited. Their reason is what are you going to do, they are paying you to work for the company and not to have yourself some pleasure while at work.

That is very surprising. It's common to block usage of social networking sites. However, companies usually allow search engines, and government websites. I think only your bosses can assess these websites. No choice, just do your work, and if you need access, then talk to your boss.

I hate it when they limit what you can do. If one wants to play online games while working fire him but don't make pc's useless by blocking everything. In our school teacher did another stupid thing. He "freezed" pc's so they are always the same after reset and we end up installing the newest firefox and some programs he missed every day Than he complains how he could update one pc but 32 is a different story like we were the ones with brilliant idea. Tell that to your boss, have a great day!

Hi In many organisation you will find that only website of that organisation can be accessed. This is to stop employees from vesting office time in surfing. In our organisation, we do not block all sites, but the unproductive sites are blocked.

I can certainly understand why firms do this as they would have staff spending more time online than doing their work!!

I am now in the university, so I can visit any site now. But from this September I'll work in a place. I did intern there. I know no site is blocked there, but it cost you RMB1.00 to produce 1MB foreign network flow. That means, if you download 3GB from a foreign server, your salary will be a negative number.
