I think we all should have one, especially if there are kids and old people around. We don't know when they will hurt themselves. It is always better to have some first aid before rushing to a doctor. So,do you have a first aid kit in your home?

Yes i have a first aid kit at home but is more like a full cabinet. Having a very klutzy children and accident prone husband. In fact I carry one in each of our vehicles as well and in both my hiking gear and purse. It amazes me how many band aides a family can go through. Though the instant ice pack was good yesterday when my 9 yr. old ran down the hill at the park and while looking over her shoulder to see if she was "beating" her sisters to the pond smacked into a tree...sigh, cut ear (her head was still turned) and a big bruise on her shoulder. I would be lost with out my kits..lol

You definitely need a first aid kit, if you have active and energetic kids like yours at home. We can't say when and where they will hurt themselves. And visiting a doctor for such simple bruises will not be wise and cost effective. By the way, how is your 9yr old now and what do you mean by accident prone husband? Any funny stories regarding him?

She is fine, does it often actually. Well my husband has welded his wedding ring to an engine block, that left some bad burns. He also got caught between his tow truck and a garbage hauler, broke 3 weeks. Also had his arm sucked up a 2500 lb suction tube from his vac truck (he does Hazmat recovery and clean up). The Er knows us by name unfortunately...lol

That is really worst for your husband to meet with so many accidents. How did he take all these calamities in his life? Is he a serious person blaming his fate all the time or a jovial person to take things like this in a soft vein? Convey my regards for his speedy recovery from his recent accident.

Speed blitz! You are right! A first aid kit comes in handy in an emergency at night times and whenever a doctor is not available immediately. We can save blood loss to a considerable amount with the help of first aid. And covering the wound with proper bandage will also assist further treatments.

husnaintahir007! Disturbing a doctor for silly and simple reasons will make you loss your reputation there, I think. The staff nurses may consider you a person to joke at, even. We shall not consult a doctor for simple things which can be treated at home itself. Consider to have a first aid kit at home.

Though Your house is relatively very near to the doctor , don't you think a first aid kit would rather come in handy at situations like night times or when the doctor is out of station , when help from a doctor is not possible ?

We really do not have a first-aid kit but I do have some betadine, cotton and some bandages. I also try to have a stock of basic medicines like paracetamol and antacids. I know it is really important to have a complete first aid kit and this must be placed in an accessible and visible location. Cheers!

Rainegirl! You just don't have a thing called first aid kit but all the necessary things to be in a kit is listed here. Just put it in any box and write on it " first aid". That's all. What else do you think that you should have?

We have an empty first aid cabinet! That's a shame since I am a nurse. I don't even have my own handy first aid kit. I think I should really get one!

Are you a nurse? How did you miss your first aid kit, then? You must have it as a part of your profession, I think. Am I right or not? Well, if you store everything in your first aid cabinet after this post, I would be happy to take the privilege of reminding you.

First Aid Kit is a must have in a House , especially when you have young ones at home. The proverb Prevention is Better than cure does not always work out . Accidents do Happen . When we do get some medical emergencies , First Aid plays a big role in quick healing and also saving life in critical situations . We need to have first aid kits . We can ask our doctors about what medicines can be used to provide first aid . Also educating ourselves towards First-Aid measures helps a lot , when you have aged people and also small ones. I have one in my home as i have old people as well as young ones . We do keep seperate boxes for different kind of medical emergencies , so that even if we are not there , it won't be difficult for others to provide the same.

That is really wise to have different boxes for different emergencies. And we should train little kids too with first aid so that they will not create a scene for silly bruises. And that is one more good advice to consult a doctor for the medicines we should keep for an emergency call. Well, when was the last time you used your kit and for what?

@srganesh I have two elderly people at home who needs constant attention . There was this situation when my grandma took a different pill other than what she supposed to take , just going by the color of the pill . You know Pills come in different colors and also different pills have same color . This confusion made her take a different medicine , which took her from life - aid to life threatning . From that day we segregate the medicines and keep it in a box with a label so that every one could read properly for what purpose it is to be used. The Last time the First aid kit came in Handy was when my relative , who came to cisit us cut his hand ,thanks to a sharpnel in the gate and it was profusely bleeding , The first aid kit came in very handy.

That should be a nightmare when your grandma mistook her pills. How did she missed the actual one? Was it not a regular pill she took for some ailments? What you have done now is a good job. Writing clearly on all the box about the content, this faults will not happen again.

No we dont, but I guess we probably should. We do have a medicine cupboard though. Generally this contains paracetamol, migrain tablets, diaorreah tablets and a few plasters, so it is not great, but is definitely better than nothing! We live a few doors down from the chemist if we do need anything though.

Both of you are right, leighann675 and StephanieAnnc! What else do we need in a first aid kit. You have a first aid cup board and that makes the difference.. But check for the expiry dates of all the medicines and try to replace them with new ones, time to time. That I consider, important.

Yes, I am cautious of health and therefore reserve the needy medicines in the kit. Though this may not be of any use but it is all needed in emergency. And, sometimes may be use of neighbors also.

Yes! a first aid kit is a moral support in an unexpected emergency. Though we may not need it often, a kit at home will prove in an emergency. And I appreciate your concern towards your neighbors too. That is really great of you.

Yes! we should not waste money on doctor's fees when we can take care at home for simple ailments like bruises or scars. Sometimes doctors suggest heavy antibiotics which would not be necessary. Can you remember when you used your kit lastly and for whom?

No, I do not actually, but this reminds me that I should get one! I used to have one, but then we moved, and I saw during the move that the kit was kind of old and dirty, so I got rid of it, and since then I have not bought a new one yet. But I will do it soon, I promise!

I appreciate myself for reminding you about the first aid kit. From the news, it was old and dirty, I can understand that you didn't use it at all and you must be lucky in that sense. But still, a first aid kit will be of great use. Keep up the promise and get one soon.

yes! We need it in any house. Do you have one is the question. Just say something about it. Is there any kids or old people in your house who meet with some simple accidents resulting in bruises or scars? What are all the medicines you have in your kit?

Of course! Surprisingly enough (as you can now see) having a first aid kit around can really be a life saver! If I was you I would go out and purchase the following items so you can have some basic first aid supplies around the house. Those items are: Adhesive tape Antibiotic ointment Antiseptic solution or towelettes Bandages Dressings (Preferably an Adaptic Non Adhesive Dressing like so http://www.saveritemedical.com/product/adaptic-non-adh-dressing-3in-x-3in-sterile-each.html) Instant cold packs Disposable latex or synthetic gloves, at least two pair Gauze pads and roller gauze in assorted sizes Scissors and tweezers Thermometer These items will have you well on your way yo having a suitable home first aid kit :)!
