Photos on walls in my home

India
June 18, 2010 12:49am CST
If you come to my home, you can see photos of various sizes on the walls. My daughter in law’s room has big ones, having pictures of animals, birds, plants, these are unframed, pasted with cello tape, can be removed later easily, she uses this for teaching her daughter. There are pictures of me and my wife, she and her husband and my elder son and his wife, all framed. In my drawing room, in front of the couch where guests sit, we have framed pictures of, me and my wife, my sons with their wife and kids. There is also a picture of my late parents, framed; you can see a garland over it. In our worship room, we call ‘PUJA ROOM’ you can see pictures of our Hindu gods and goddesses and their idols made from brass and marble. All have garlands over them. You will never find any garland over picture of persons alive, but only upon pictures of dead relatives; it is just a way of showing respect to them. If you stand at the main entrance to my home ‘KALYANI BHUWAN’, You can see a big 2feet by 2 feet picture of ‘GOD GANESHA ‘, printed on marble plate, it is supposed to bring good-luck to me and all who live here. Below this you can see a shiny granite plate, over which 'KALYANI BHUWAN' is itched, this is name of my home. Do you hang pictures on the walls, what are they? Any tradition of putting garlands on pictures of the dead and on pictures of GOD? Please share. Thanks in advance. Professor

I have no pictures on my walls of anyone as i do not like to see the photos everyday, I have many photo albums which have family members in and friends. i do have pictures of beach scenes to calm the room, I think atmoshere in a room is decided by the decor, so wouldn't feel comfortable with photos of any of my loved one's that had passed over but this is just my way and everyone has their own ways.

Hi aquariand: In my case I don't like some of my pictures because I am not a very photogenic person, so in most of the pictures I look UGLY! Lol. XD. I would like to keep these pictures out of my sight but apparently my parents like them so, I don't like to discuss with my parents over this situation. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day. My grandmother is very religios and once I entered to her room when She was worshiping as a daily practice. I saw there were pictures on the wall of almost all the Hindu Gods, also there are many small statues in her PUJA ROOM. She always visit Allahabad to get blessings of the holy river GANGA. She will always get at least one picture every holy place she visits. That way her room is full of picture. Also, we have pictures of my old generation family members, there are paintings brought from different places and most of them were brought by my late grandfather. He loved gardening and pictures and most of the pictures in his room were of flowers and great peoples like Vivekanand.

"When we take photograph of a person, we photograph his spirit at the sametime also!" - This was the thought of famous photographer 'Jeetendra Arya', expressed decades back! A photograph, a portrait, a painted portrait or an idol always carry a silent message about the person or character! That much silence is required for us (both physically and mentally) to get tuned to the message and grasp its ideology depending upon the expression of the photograph! Now-a-days, in the system of digital photograph and animation, a revolution has taken place by multimedia technology and I find, people purchasing printed handing photographs has reduced a lot! Only one or two art-work or group-photos are seen in most rooms of people! Of course, liking for Ganesh idol has has increased more among people! In my rooms, photographs are now a few that also some framed ones of Lords Balabhadra-Subhadra-Jagannath, Konark-Temple, Ganesh, Shiva, Lord Balajee of Tirupati, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahanssa, Sri Rama-Abhisek and lord Krishna. The character in each photo impacts our emotions and thoughts in its unique way, bringing real spiritual elevations!! Thanks for this nice discussion on photos those induce new light of hopes!!

hello prof saheb, did not get your phone call yesterday. My house too has photos of my father and mother and i have photos of Gods and all my Gurus on the walls of my entire house. I don`t have a separate Pooja room.My whole house is a pooja room.I do not perform ritualistic worship but i practice Kriya Yoga which is a completely Antarmukhi sadhana, or internal spiritual practice. For this sadhana i do not require pictures or idols of Gods.My God and Gurus are entirely within me, within my heart.

Hello Professor. Your detailed description reminded me of the old house where I was brought up. We also had photo frames on the walls and pictures as well. In my school apartment, I have some big maps and some photos of mine and my colleagues. I see them every day. It reminds me of my old colleagues who are now working somewhere else. Take care.

Pictures on my wall: Pictures of my children from their first year, fingerpaintings that they did in day care, a landscape that my parents bought for me, a reproduction of a Franz Marc painting that I like, a still life that my in-laws gave us, a picture that a friend from Wales gave us, a picture that we bought in Prague, two collages of my husband's favorite photos, a picture from Singing in the Rain with Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds's autographs and many other things I am sure. No garlands, nothing religious...

I have some pictures of my family in my bedroom and in the room where I work. I am an agnostic, so I don´t have any picture of God to put up. But believers in my country (mostly catholic) sometimes have a saint or virgin in their walls. I did not grow up with many traditions, religions or otherwise. I have made up some traditions for my own family (like getting together for adiner on the date when I got married). Have a nice day!

While I don't currently have any pictures hanging on the walls in my house, this is something that I am planning on doing within my house in the near future. I have pictures of my children that I want to get framed and also a few pictures from my wedding party as well. I think that having pictures of your loved ones displayed inside your house makes it much more a home than just a house. I don't have any traditions of using garlands to signify those that are deceased though I think it is a very neat idea.
