Why do people start loads of pointless discussions rather than one good one?

June 18, 2010 6:13am CST
It bugs me on Mylot when I go to an interest and see someone has started a load of discussions often saying almost the same thing one after the other. I think some people think they will earn more this way, but you are actually better off just starting one quality discussion that gets a lot of responses. It shows some people are just seeing dollar signs and aren't really concerned with quality discussions when it comes to this site.

I think that they are under the completely wrong illusion that quantity is better than quality. They just keep churning out useless 'discussions' that have no potential to become 'real' discussions. It seems to be very hard to get over to some of the members that myLot is about starting and contributing toward discussions, they also don't seem to realise how much fun they can have and how much they can learn by joining in these discussions.

Yes they are far more likely to get responses to one well thought out discussion that attracts lots of people. And in turn you earn more from one discussion that gets a lot of responses.

@ oldchem, I think they are under the impression that they earn for the discussion in addition to all the responses made by others. @ nancy, are you saying that you earn for the responses made by others?

You are so right. That is why when I see this I just move on and annoy those types of discussions.

I don't respond to them buts it's frustrating when other people do as it only encourages them to start more.

Hi lelin: I think that's the best thing we can do, ignore them. We have to active a personal filter to only participate on the discussions that are really worth it and that means: discussions that concerns us, that are interesting and that help Mylot to be a better place. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day. ALVARO

Hi there! I have actually noticed the same my friend. Another thing is that many are starting a discussion with a one liner question. They never realize that with such, they cannot earn even a single cent. It is provided in the mylot guidelines, but there are many coming out. As for me, that is why I would prefer making comments than starting a discussion unless I have a real and sensible topic in my head. I can use most of my time commenting than starting a discussion. Besides, starting a discussion requires a proper timing. You cannot just start a discussion when only few members are online. I think as a long time mylotter, I think there are really secrets when is the proper time to start a discussion so that many members could easily your discussion. If not, it will just be a waste of time, energy and effort. Well, as you said, quality post really is the most important thing to earn more here. Many are ignoring that. They thought perhaps every post earns them a point even though they are senseless topic. Well, we cannot judge them. Let us just keep on posting sensible discussions. Never mind those who does not want to. God bless!

I think they must be earning something or they wouldn't keep doing it, other people in this thread have said they've experimented with it and it doesn't effect their earnings. As long as people keep responding they will keep doing it.

My first reaction to this question is that, just like in real life, small talk will always be around. You either love or hate small talk. Many ppl are not comfortable with deep discussions. It's often a temperament thing. Some ppl are more geared to analytical thought and others are not interested at all. The other big reason for it here on mylot is that we are to try not to repeat discussion topics. We are truly running out of things to say. Even this discussion topic you started has been rehashed many times before. Also, some ppl are here to make friends. Others like deep discussion. And still others like to be argumentative. Variety in ppl makes the world go around. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Also, we don't make enough here to really say that someone is "seeing dollar signs". It's more like "seeing pennies"! LOL!!

Oh! And also, many ppl have very little skill with their English and are using this site as a way to practice their language abilities. We need lots of patience with those situations too.

Greetings nancyrowina, I am a newbie at Mylot, but I really like this place. Its where I find people unknown to you talking of things you like. It gets me to think how so much people are thinking of the same thing at the same time. Its really sad to know that there are some persons who post only to earn. Hope things change. I hope jointly, we can make quality discussions if we stick together, and hence automatically those spammers should begin to feel the difference. Regards, Ash

If we all didn't respond to these discussions and reported them it would help, but the Mylot admin would be over run and there's always someone who responds to these discussions probably other spammers helping each other out, it's pointless as you never earn fortune at Mylot anyway it's a myth. Welcome to Mylot anyway hope you enjoy it here.

No-one makes money just by starting topics. We do not earn for the responses that they receive. We only earn for what we type, not for what others type therefore, if we want to make money, should go back and comment on the responses and turn it into a discussion. If we post lots of topics that is not possible.

@ moni, I can see that you new and welcome, but you should really elaborate on your response, mylot pays us for our quality of work here. @ nancy, You type you earn, I type I earn, you don't receive payment for my responses, you do receive payment for your comments back to the responder. Usually I would say my 2 cents worth but in this case it would be according to mylot.
18 Jun 10
actually you do earn for responses to the discussions you start, and you earn more if you come back and comment on the responses, though you don't earn for comments only posts.

I think people start random discussions to make money. Its a matter of opinion whether or not they are stupid. Some may not think as you do. I look at it like this: I start what I believe to be good discussions. As you do the same. Its not for me to say whether or not a discussion is good for all. NOPE! Just for me. One good discussion may be good as far as content. They are making more money. It depends what you're trying to get out of MyLot. I have been a member for a few years now and MyLot is successful because it allows people to create one or a hundred discussions. It all depends on what they want to do. I leave it up to the person creating them. They have their reasons. Im not going to worry about them. Life is too short. Happy MyLotting dl

Hi nancy! You are right! It is ridiculous to have so many pointless discussions! I don't know why some people feel that posting 10 boring, annoying and pointless discussions one after another is going to make them more money because it doesn't! I prefer to respond to a discussion that makes sense, makes me think and is meaningful. But, this keeps happening over and over! There are still some people that just don't get it. And those are the discussions that I ignore!

Yes I try to just ignore them, for some reason all my friend notification settings have changed to on for some reason and now I've got to go through and turn them off.

you are right it is always better to start one quality discussion instead of more number of discussions which has the same meaning or just meaningless. i think those people who believe in starting the discussions only might be it is easier to them or they may just lack time and hence they just want to write at mylot for the day and they feel comfortable in starting the discussions as reading others discussions and replying may take time.

It is really quite hard to start a good discussion on here when there are so many discussions starting everyday. I rarely start discussions I mainly just respond to others.

And you responded with a one line response, way to make yourself popular around here, and lots of other people have responded positively so it can't be that pointless.

ya, you are rite. Most of the people are only concerned about dollars. They see only dollars. That's why i only respond to quality discussions. I love discussions, but here i have found more often that people are putting up useless and illogical discussions. Some discussions are worthless. They lack quality. Mylot is a good place to grow. there are lot of things to learn here. people forget that.

Yes I wish people would just stick to responding to discussions before they started their own. Then they'd get an idea of what discussions get started all the time and what works and what doesn't.

Hello, Nancyrowina. I've deleted lots of friends for just this reason. My email notifiers just churn out lots of them, and I think, I don't need this. I'm busy with other things, and my time on MyLot is precious to me. I want to spend it responding to interesting discussions, not scrolling through the dross to find something worth responding to.

That's what happened to me to prompt me to start this discussion, a person who starts millions of discussions about basically the same thing, it's so annoying.

i really don't know...sometimes they start a load of those discussions, and then are never to be seen for a long while...only to return with more & more & more of those discussions...

They must be expecting to earn of those discussions for days and just do nothing, which never happens as you have to comment to keep them going and earn any money.

I'm still new at Mylot. I do not much give a response. How do we know that the discussions that we make are the same? I now hesitate to make the discussion. I'm afraid the discussion that I made, there have been made previously. Is there any way to know the discussions that have been made?

Not really as you can't search them, it's best to only start a discussion if you have thought of a really good one and just stick to responding to them at first. Then you will see what kind of discussions get started all the time and know to avoid making the same mistake. It's good to see a newbie who cares about that sort of thing anyway welcome to Mylot.

Don't I know about it?! I start a totally simple discussion ...just for the heck of it (a long time ago) and I get more than 100 responses and now when I start quality discussions, I hardly get 10 responses! And the people who see dollar signs are under a misconception. Most of the irrelevant discussions are deleted (so they don't really make money there) and how many discussions do they need to respond to to make a dollar a day?

I really don't know, I think it's partly to do with being in a rush to make big bucks and not really understanding how things work. It doesn't bother me, as we're all entitled to our thoughts and I avoid any I think will be deleted. No offense but some might think this is pointless, which I don't hence why I'm responding but others might. Personally I know the type your talking about, I've noticed a certain member who thinks it's important to tell us every-time she's received a reward.

that's really what i think too, they think they will only earn from discussions, a lot of discussions they start, even when senseless. they do not think about the true meaning of mylot, sharing thoughts and experiences and also problems. that's what i think.

Hello nancy, Haven't you gotten used to that You've been here longer than i can remember. and if memory serves me correct, there were a lot more senseless discussion before mylot starts upgrading themselves and improving this site. I believe it's our duty as regulars or veterans that we show these people the right way to use mylot not as money making but also for learning and having fun. now, if they remain to be hot hot headers, then report is the only option for us.

Yes Mylot have got better at stopping the flow of pointless discussions but you still see them. maybe Mylot need to make it clearer in the terms that you earn more for quality discussions. But users who abuse the site probably aren't reading the terms anyway so what's the point.

Hi nancyrowina: I agree with you. I don't know who are the persons that do this but personally, I prefer to only start a discussion when I consider that it's a real quality discussion, specially if it's about a subject that has never be discussed or I make the same question but in another point of view which make it different. I agree with you, I don't like to see a discussion with no sense and I try my best to respond only the best ones. Thanks for starting this discussion. Have a nice day. ALVARO

Good perspective...that approach may be a good temporary vision to meet people and challenge oneself, but the motivation may be more often, like you reveal. I will respond to this topic 1,000,000 times ;) best wishes, Eric.
