Children and their tummies

June 23, 2010 2:20am CST
My daughter is two and a half and pretty much since she was born she has a sticky out tummy which often looks like a pregnant tummy. I spoke to a health visitor a number of months ago now who reassured me that it was normal and apparently more so in little girls though I dont understand why it is so big. My daughter eats a healthy diet with fruit and some veg (though she doesnt like her veg as much as fruit), she has a varied diet though is really fussy at dinner times and often wont eat a lot so what is causing it? Does anyone have any ideas of how I can help it? I have tried cutting out certain foods to see if that makes a difference though so far her tummy has not shrunk. She also gets a good amount of excersise.

The fact that her tummy sticks out shouldn't be something that concerns you if she isn't heavy. I'm blessed that both of my children don't really have a gut on them, but I've observed a lot of other children that do. My two nieces are a good example of this, they do have guts on them, but neither one of them is overweight (in fact they are actually underweight for their ages). That said, it isn't the fact that they have protruding stomachs that you should be concerned about, but rather her body weight.

My daughters weight is just under average too even with her stomach so I guess I shouldnt worry too much - it is hard not to worry with children isnt it lol

Need not be surprised if find your child potbellied. Especially if her belly filled out food / drinks so that it looked very large, it is because his stomach muscles are still weak because of not yet trained. Later, approaching age 10 years-along with a variety of motor activity performed; creeping, rolling, running and other, abdominal-wall would harden by itself so that the belly bulge is not visible anymore.

Hi my two girls at thisage had toddler tummies, as sheshoots up in height she will lose it, if the health visitor has checked and said all isok I am sure it is. If you are still worried take her to the doctors to get checked out but for me and my girls itwas normal. huggles. Ellie :D

My daughter is eight years old and her tummy sticks out a bit too! I used to have the same thing when I was her age according to my mother. I was a little concerned too because she is not overweight. My doctor told me that air in the tummy can cause the bloated effect and that it is nothing to worry about; it will disappear in time as the muscles strengthen.

Do you think it is something to do with girls then? I know from some baby photos of me that I had a big tummy as a baby though am not sure what it was like at my daughters age as it was pretty much hidden in photos by my clothes

My daughter was a preemie and her tummy stuck out. It is normal and what most little girls look like. My daughters tummy would seem to get really big right before she would grow and then go down a bit. She still has a bit of a tummy but she is 3 now and starting to loosed that baby look and looks like a little girl now. Boys just seem to thin out quicker then girls, not sure why. She will grow out of if, i think it has something to do with how much they grow in the first few years. As for dinner my daughter hardly eats dinner her big meal is lunch. But kids will eat when they are hungry and as long as she is not waking in the middle of the night hungry she is getting pleanty to eat. Kids graze that is what they do and sometimes don't want to stop and eat but if they get hungry they will. It amazes me how little she eats one day and then she will eat a lot the next. I wouldn't worry too much over it. It is normal.

My SIl's daughter has pot belly, it is reducing in size as she is aging. it will disappear once ur daughter participates in outdoor activities and games. sports like swimming help in shaping a girls'figure.
