I think the rules say that to determine if the player is offside you have to look at his feet, if his feet are ahead the line of the last defender then he is offside, even if his hands, chest, arms or head look ahead. Anyway is very difficult to determine when it is a fast and close action like that one, or when there are several players moving.

I meant by saying "even if his hands..." that offside is only determined by the players feet.

Yes, Van Persie did look offside on that second goal. It did seem that he was interfering with the play when he poked his leg. But there is another angle which people missed out on that, the ball actually deflected of an Uruguayan and if that is the fact, then Van Persie cannot be offside, if I understand the rules properly. So it is a controversial decision, but could have gone either way!! Cheers! Ram

There are certainly quite a number of upsets in this World Cup so far. I was rooting for Brazil, and they infamously made an exit against Netherlands. Therefore, it would be great to see Germany wins the upcoming match against Span and defeat the Netherlands. It's my personal view.. but if Spain wins, that would be surprising, because they have not been showing much performance, albeit the fact that it's cool for them to enter the semi-finals. However, it's anybody's game and I don't have anything against Spain's win, but it would be more awesome to see Germany battling it out with Netherlands. My personal soccer diary thoughts, LOL. By the way, speaking of off-sides. Yeah, sometimes a bit of the foot gets into the line and the referee keeps quiet, but sometimes they don't let matter off easily. This is crucial and I think there should be improvements on this one. Human judgments tent to be clouded, and especially if a goal is denied or just being allowed to pass through under controversial circumstances, it would really be a talk between soccer lovers. Glad you watch the World Cup..

Yes he was but that was not the only mistake the referees made in this game let alone the whole tournament. I'm really pissed with some of the decisions the refs made in this World Cup. Especially in the Germany-England game and the Argentina - Mexico one.

Yes he was offside because he was on the trajectory of the ball and he influenced the action... The linesman should have seen this and in my opinion it was a major mistake that influenced the game. On the other hand Holland was better.
