Should I have to pay for gas?

About a month ago my mom asked me to accompany her on a trip about 5 hours away so she had company. As I don't get vacation I had to ask for 2 days off work unpaid, and then a few weeks later I was told my job is being taken to a different area of the country so I was forced to take a layoff. My last day was the day before we left on the trip, and mom knew I was pretty broke so I had to do a lot of stuff on the cheap. Well, Imagine my surprise when we get to our destination and she asks me for gas money. I'm dumbfounded because I'm broke and trying my hardest to make ends meet knowing I don't have a job when I get back, and she wants me to pitch in for part of the $200 gas bill the trip is going to cost? Am I actually obliged to pitch in for gas for this trip? I would have never come if I knew it came with these strings, and I feel really hurt and betrayed she didn't mention it before.

Of course you don´t have to pay for the gas! Your mother wanted company. If she hadn´t had you, maybe she would have had to pay someone if she wanted that. As it is, you don´t have to pay a dime. I hope you can talk to her and tell her she cannot expect that. Luck!

No. Not only are you doing her a favor by going with her, you also don't have the money.

I would not have given her any gas money. Actually, I would have asked her for gas money if we had been driving my car....

If she asked you to go with I would say you are not. She wanted company on the trip and it's not your place to pay her bill on it.

I don't think in this situation you should have been obligated to pay for any gas. You was invited by your mom and if she had asked you to come along for the ride and also help pitch in for gas before you left that would have been a different story.I am sorry about your layoff and I hope you find a bigger and better job because of it. I hope you and your mom work things out and I guess before going on a invited road trip again with her or perhaps anyone make sure to ask if anything is expected of you other then company. Take care and good luck to you .
