My PC is running so slow at start up.....

My PC is so slow. IT runs for nearly 7-8 minutes at least at start up.. I can hear the thing rolling in there (the tower) trying to get going. It just all of a sudden takes so long to boot up and be able to open anything. I thought it was my virus program (AVG) and so I changed it to Karparsky. Same thing only worse with that. So I took it off and put AVG back on. Still...slow while something in there is just a rolling. My first question is does anyone have any suggestionsas to what is going on to make it do this? Win XP is my system. Then I wonder.. if my RAM is to full so it has to work longer to pull everything up..do I have to much in a "start task' option? I don't have that much that I know of. I have lots of icons on my desktop, but don't use them hardly at all, and I guess should take them off and do bookmarks, but would that help my problem? Thanks for any suggetions!

i think you should upgrade your PC. maybe your harddisk is full, do you have software "tuneup utilities 2010"? if you dont, so install it, it will help you to maintance your PC. good luck

Got plenty of Hard drive left. I don't do games and downloads or anything like that.. that is what is so annoying about this. i dont' do the stuff that is likely to cause it to run slow. The RAM is the only thing I can think of that might be the problrm. But i don't know how to check that. I deleted things on the desktop that I don't use hardly and my task menu is only a few needed things. I'll look at TU2010. Thanks for suggestion

Sounds to me like you have way to many things going on in the background. Way to many start-up items. Programs that start, or are part of other progrems that run in the background. You can turn a lot of those off. In truth your redgersty, and anti-virous are the only two start-up programs you need to run. Go to run, type in ms.configue a.exe then hit enter. After you do that, hit start up and uncheck everything but your anti-birous. You would be supprised how much faster it should run. Also if possible. try and upgrade your ram. Im sure things will work themselves out.

I use System Mechanic to prevent that sort of thing. But I do not use their antivirus as Kaspersky is the only AV I trust. Taking the icons off is not going to help.

I didn't like Kaspersky.. but then again it could be whatever my problem is that made me not like it. I guess I should have said I went thro and deleted things I dont use from the "add/remove programs" in the control panel, not just the icons. I'll look into SM. Thanks

Yes, please be sure that you uninstalled all of the AV programs that you are not using, as they could conflict with one another. I do NOT use SM's AV, btw. Good luck.

You gotta clean up the mess in your drives.Go to control panel and Add or Remove Programs and remove some of the installed programs which are being used rarely.it saves a lot of time to load all those stuff may be you're over burdening your PC.make sure you didnt select any programs with "start up automatically when system reboots" option as this might be the reason behind.Last but not least never Fill in your drive which has your OS --- its good to maintain some free space so your system works faster.hope you're not using two anti-viruses that can slow your system as well.great day

I did go through and took of some software that I don't use anymore (games for the kids) and the start menu...took of 5-6 things I didn't need. It has helped some. I think the Anti virus (AVG) is part of my problem... it is constantly updateing or running or something! Cant figure that one out. I can be typing and all of a sudden, it all stalls and won't let me go anywhere and I hear it "rolling" in the tower so something is running, and I can only assume it it the AVG for some reason. Maybe not, and don't know what to do if it is, but maybe this will all work itself out! If not, oh well. I don't thin I want to add RAM based on the expense. This PC is 6 years old and I might be able to buy a new one for not much more than the cost of more RAM/installation. Have to check that out. Thanks for your help

Your PC might be full of program applications that are running on start-up. Try browsing on those application and uninstall those who are not necessary. Now if you thing they are necessary, then put an addition RAM.
