Any tips for wearing and shopping for high heels?

I recently bought a new pair of shoes - with heels that are higher than any other pair I've owned. I wore it to my friend's wedding yesterday. Because of that, my feet were hurting so much at the reception that I couldn't go around to snap photos of my happy friends... So I was wondering, does anyone have tips on what to look for when buying high-heeled shoes? Any tips on how to wear them properly for minimum discomfort? Thanks!

I never had a problem walking with high heels, it's just so unpractical I stopped buying them :-) But, according to the Econimist (which I read in the train last week because it was the only thing they had in English), it is important to stretch after you've worn them as women who wear high heels a lot get shorter muscles in the calves and thicker achilles tendons than those who don't. The shorter tendon might hurt when they use normal shoes. You can get some kind of pads to put in the toes I think, to give some more elasticity when you walk. You could maybe try something like that? Maybe you can use them in the shoes you have? And practice a bit, it's probably also what you're used to.

Yes, I do think practice is the key for me. And those toe cushions might be worth a try, they're not costly anyway. Thanks for commenting Torunn :)

I would stick the the shoes you like and are most comfortable with. Don't go to great lengths just for great shoes, because like have recently found out, the feeling might not be worth what you went through to even get the shoes. You can do that or slowly become adapted to wearing higher heels and maybe buy some other those soft gel foot things that fit into your shoes for comfort. I haven't tried that myself but it might be worth a shot if you really want higher heels. Happy shoe hunting :)

I only really got those shoes for the wedding. I got this nice dress and none of my shoes looked good with it. I'll try those soft gel thingies you mentioned for next time. Thanks! :)
