Why are we not told?

punishment - Child made to raise her hand and stand on a desk

In school when we are asked to stand on the desk with hands up, we know why, when parents put us in corners we know why, when we are promoted or demoted in the office we know why but here everything is a secret. Suddenly you see someone's star going down or going up and the individual does not know why? If we know why then we can perform better here.We should be told. This is my conviction. Do you share this view with me? Or do you have any other thought?

Allknowing we ARE told. MyLot make it perfectly clear in the FAQs. If our star goes down it is because we have received more negative ratings than plusses. Plusses make it rise and negs make it fall - simple! The problem is not about knowing why it went up or down but knowing why certain users are allowed to use the rating system without having understood its purpose! If everyone used it as it is supposed to be used then there would be a rainbow of colours with many joyful Lotters and no more complaints but until the majority take on the responsability of understanding how it should be used, this is not going to happen. Not everyone reads everything here, some because they don't have time and others because of connection problems, therefore many are possibly unaware of the changes that were made last year by myLot because their attention was brought to the problem and they DID act on it. Since then new users cannot rate until they receive their own star at 100 and all Lotters can only rate each individual Lotter for a total of 11 times in each 24 hour period. This has cut down on the possibility of abusing the ratings that was taking place until then (which you were probably unaware of). There are users who lost their higher stars before that change was made but they just put up with it and do not complain, in the hope that one day it will get back to where it was because complaining could have the opposite effect

"The end result therefore is that as long as the mouse is in the hands of the indisciruminate user there is little one can do to protect ones own reputation" Exactly. Surely it is not up to myLot admins to educate everyone too?

Your reputation here Diana is in the hands of the indiscriminate user. Are you not afraid of that specially when you say myLot will not step in?

The problem is not about knowing why it went up or down but knowing why certain users are allowed to use the rating system without having understood its purpose! If everyone used it as it is supposed to be used then there would be a rainbow of colours with many joyful Lotters and no more complaints but until the majority take on the responsability of understanding how it should be used, this is not going to happen. It is clear from this that myLot will go by the ratings given by users. So users decide our reputation. This malaise of indiscriminate rating will not cease not because users do not know the rules but they do it more to settle scores whatever they are. At the same time. And again considering that it is not possible for Admin to check each and every activity those whose activity is not rated negative/reported are those that ride the crest not so much because of what they contribute. And then there is yet another category who play safe and not venture into responding to topics that may result in controversies or disagreeing with the one who puts up a topic. The end result therefore is that as long as the mouse is in the hands of the indisciruminate user there is little one can do to protect ones own reputation. Was I wrong in assuming therefore that myLot Admin has a say which prompted me to post the above topic?

Don't blame mylot, it's the members who are the cause of a star going up and down. We can rate other users, if mylot can, they don't, or they aren't sharing with us... Now standing on the desk with hands up in the air? That's dangerous, it was always the corner for us back in school.

Unless myLot recognises those ratings and ratifies them (plus or minus) users or members can do nothing. Atleast that is my understanding. If someone rates you negative to settle scores with you which often happens I am sure myLot will ignore those ratings if you have done no wrong.

You talk as if our star rating has something to do with how much we earn, I don't know for sure, but I am pretty sure it doesn't.

Stars show our performance here and we are paid for our performance.

Hi all! I agree with you that if we are told, where we are lacking and committing some (silly) mistakes, we could improve upon ourselves. Alas, it is not so, mylot keep it a secret, how they give stars to members or demote or promote them. I have heard the senior members that if our posts are rated and we are given more plus (+), we will get better rating. I am sure, you would soon get blue star, the highest rates star. I twice got the blue star and then I was demoted to red star (deep sigh) but I still enjoy mylotting.

All! I think what 'mys' says is correct. It would be difficult to know how we have been rated or not rated by each member here on my lot. Record about ratings our posts is best kept by mylot administration and therefore, it is they who only know about ratings of our posts. Let it continue this way. Alongside, you should rate others' posts, so that they could get higher stars (I do the same and I rate everyone as positive.) Deepak PS - Did you check your latest PM?

It is not a secret. The only secret is that we do not know how each other Lotter rates and they do not know how we rate either. The rest is explained in the FAQs and the fact that our stars seem to 'get stuck' is also explained too. Read Alice here for example: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2353437.aspx?p=1#2_21382809

It was there till recently! That is the point as I do not know what went wrong. I feel we must be told. So you too have had that experience. Even I am not demotivated because of this factor.

all knowing su rely you have read all the my lot information by now which explains the ratings which we do for each other. I usually always rate positive unless the person is insulting, I seldom give out negatives at all and I do rate everyone and think more of us should do this. the ratings are our reps here and they do have to do with our earnings, the better the rep number the more y ou can make.
