My ferret don't live in a cage no more and he runs around the house. He ueses the litter box when he wants to, but there's sometimes he's so lazy and goes on the floor. I was wondering if anyone had some good ideas to stop him from doing that.

I would thinking additional training is needed. Either go to a pet shop to ask advice on further training for your ferret or read some books on training pets. Things like training your pet takes time.

I have never had ferrets, but we have one at the local shelter. I find she does this to get attention. She was fully trained, but when she doesn;t get enough attention. My rabbit does the same thing when I am giving one of my other animals more attention, and he wants it. Also, he is is mad at me for something then he will tend to go outside his box.

It is one of the things that you really have to stay on top of to train them, and sometimes it can just be really difficult, even when you have litter boxes in all of the corners, you have to be sure they are ssecure as we know ferrets love to push those things out of the corner, then there are those times where they go.. hey I gotta go and wont even look for a corner and just back up and go. What I would do since you want to let them free roam, is designate one room to start with try to get them to use the litter boxes in that room, then you can expand as they are perfected with one room. What you are trying to do is allow them to get familiar with each area before expanding so they know where the litter boxes are when they are in those areas. They love to roam and explore, sometimes they may not be real familiar with the area and not remember there was a litter pan close by. Sometimes they smell the scent of when they went to the bathroom before and use it again. Something you have to realize is that you will still probably have accidents. Hopefully you do not have carpet as over time the odor will start to be a issue.

I had a ferret once, and they are balls of energy. While they can be trained, they're pretty much free-spirited, and you can't really keep them from doing what they're used to. However, I installed a tunnel that runs to the litter box, and I found out that my ferret never wanted to leave! I miss Sascha!

Your ferret started to get lazy, that is why he forgets to go back to the litter. Male are more lazy as female. So you have to teach him again where it's allowed and where not. Use a cage and put the litter inside and his food bowl also. He is only allowed to come out of the cage after he used the litter. (ferrets go there in between 10 min. after they woke up). If you let him walk around, check him every 10-15 min or better.. pick him up, place him on the litter and close the cage and leave. He will soon understand why you do this. And.. stay consequent. Enjoy your ferret!
