Since last Friday, I saw that there is a major change in my father's life... he started watching national geographic channel every evening, daily, after coming back from work! And not just in order to catch some easy sleep, he actually listen to it and when I speak with him he happen to remind every while some information about something that he watched there yesterday and how amusing our nature is. Do not get me wrong, I actually happy to see that my dad shows interest in science and nature, its just been kind of a shocker to me because he never was the education-lover kind of person. He actually has kind of childish nature sometimes and he never graduated school... and whenever I talk about the global warming he just refuses to listen( it actually happen with any scientific subject that I happen to talk about...). Well... he did turn into 42 a month or two ago. I guess my father finally matured I even watched one of national geographic channel's TV shows with him about creatures under the sea and it was quite fun! So... does your father watching National Geographic channel even though it is not fitting his characteristics? or are you watching it yourself?

I am 38 years old and I have a seven year old son. I have always been a fan of national geographic. I love watching it since you will discover many things. The great thing is that my son has watched it likewise and he is also now into it. Its really great since I see his interest with such giving him much knowledge and information. Truly national geographic is something worth our time.

I agree that watching this type of television is definitely worth our time. I watch it with my children as well, and my oldest daughter loved it. My little one is still too young for many of the programs, but she does like watching the shows that have different animals and trying to identify what kinds of animals they are. She gets so excited when she can name them correctly - it is adorable!

I think that my dad watches National Geographic Channel occasionally, but he would be more inclined to watch the History Channel. I watch many different informational channels and National Geographic is definitely one of them. They have some really interesting shows on it, and I have learned quite a bit by watching these kinds of channels, because they are both entertaining and informative. My oldest daughter and I could sit for an entire day (usually a rainy, miserable day when we couldn't go outside and do anything) and watch these kinds of programs, and I didn't even have to feel "guilty" about us watching so much television, because we were learning, too. My hubby was a little surprised when I first had him watch some of the channels and programs, but he gave them a try and found that he liked them as well. Now, he will even see something on the TV Guide listing on one of these channels and suggest watching it.

It is good to see that there are people who show interest in such programs at the television. These days people who watch those kind of shows usually named as geeks, but I don't mind it... I think that watching TV and learning on the same time is a double win

Yup, we have our "Geek Badges" cleaned and spit-shined and wear them proudly! Seriously, many people that see me or have just met me would never imagine that I am a geek at heart. It is not that I try to hide it or anything, but that is only one of my many interests. I think people judge a lot based on looks, and someone that is athletic looking and likes sports is generally not thought of as a "geek" ... until he or she starts spouting off facts about nature, science and technology that is. Most of my family are avid readers, and we like to read all kinds of books. When my oldest daughter was little, I read her all kinds of books about dinosaurs, animals, nature, and science. Then, when there was a television program on about one of the things that we were reading about in our books (usually on National Geographic or Discovery or Animal Planet, etc.), we could watch it, and it would make the books "come to life" and give them a whole new perspective. The Discovery Store also used to have a bunch of really neat "toys" and experiments that you could buy to do with children, and they had projects geared towards all age ranges. We combined all these things to make learning and experimenting fun and interactive, and it worked really well. Another channel that we like to watch is the Weather Channel (or at least I believe that is the one). It has some really good and interesting programs on about different kinds of storms, how they are formed and where, what kind of damage they normally do, and how to best stay safe during them. We watch the DIY (Do It Yourself) Network as well, and we have gotten some really good tips on home and garden decorating and improvement. Wow, reading this back it sounds like I do nothing but sit in front of the television and watch it all the time, but honestly that is not the case. It is just that over time we have watched many different programs on these channels, and the knowledge adds up, but we really do other things as well.
