Calcium Intake

I've read an article on the newspaper this morning about taking care of our bones. I got stuck in one of its lines, "Those who are coffee addicts, chain smokers and alcoholics are prone to bone diseases or fractures." Most adults do not have a habit of drinking a glass of milk in a day and I am one of them. Women who are 25 to 50 years old should have an intake of 1,000mg of calcium a day while men need 1,000-1,500mg. I am not a chain smoker and alcoholic, but I am a coffee addict. I cannot say, but I think I'll try to drink milk as best as I can. I don't want to compromise my health since I am not getting any younger. Do you have other information about it? Do you drink milk everyday? Do you know other non-dairy calcium supplements?

i myself am not a milk fan, i only take calcium supplements once a day. i've read from a newsletter the top 10 calcium rich foods that we can take to provide the necessary amount required for our calcium needs. Some of the top calcium-rich foods are: 1. Cheese 2. Yogurt 3. Milk 4. Sardines 5. Dark leafy greens like spinach, kale, turnips, and collard greens 6. Fortified cereals such as Total, Raisin Bran, Corn Flakes (They have a lot of calcium in one serving.) 7. Fortified orange juice 8. Soybeans 9. Fortified soymilk (Not all soymilk is a good source of calcium, so it's best to check the label.) 10. Enriched breads, grains, and waffles if you're not a fan of milk as well, at least we have other alternatives :)

Hello! You're going to make a right decision. Women are more prone to Osteoporosis than men. If you want to get the best result with your calcium intake, you should drink milk instead of taking calcium supplements because the liquid form of calcium is easily absorbed by our body. We should avoid drinking too much tea and soda, these also contributes in weakening our bones. Make it a daily habit of drinking a glass of milk everyday, this is what I've been doing to prevent bone problems. Thank you and have a great day!

Thanks for your suggestions and comments. Women tend to get smaller when they get old due to osteoporosis. Now, I think I really have to change my life style of drinking so much coffee. We have Pro bone milk at home, that's for my mother. I know I'll experience stomach cramps but I'll try my best to drink it within the week.

vitamin d is necessary with calcium in order to absorb the calcium the best the body can. vitamin d is already included in all the milk products i see so i don't think taking vitamin d by pill form is necessary.

Most doctors would advise calcium supplements at 40 or younger. Check it out with your ob-gyne, if you should. Milk is good too because you get other nutrients from it.

I know that calcium is good for our bones. We need to take in natural contents of Calcium. Morning sunlight provides calcium, citrus fruits also provides calcium to our body. We also have food suppliments that are available in the market.

It's really important to take care of our bones especially us women because we are more prone to osteoporosis. I also enjoy a cup of coffee everyday but then I learned that caffeine takes away calcium in our body. That's why I try to balance both. I drink 1 cup of coffee (usually in the morning) and 1 glass of milk in the evening.

Thanks for your comment.... It's good that you can drink at least a glass of milk a day. I have lactose intolerance with milk that's why I don't drink milk. I've tried the brand that mother is using once but I can't take it purely. I put a little bit of coffee to flavor it. Then, I never take it again.

I don't drink coffee and I also don't smoke. But when I was younger I used to drink a lot of soft drinks, and it made my bones weak. So now I'm trying my best to minimize my soft drink intake. I also drink a calcium tablet every day and try to eat and drink food with calcium.

Hi dear, I used to drink milk, coffee and tea also. But all are in limited quaintly and a nominal levels. I mean to say, nothing excessive. A balancing of all can reduce the side effects. I think you can try the Calcium Sandoz, one kind of tablet we used to get in the medical shops. This is clinically prepared and available in all medical shops and differently made for children, man and women. But I don't know in your country, here in India, this is common and not much expensive. They are claiming that it is balancing the shortage of iron and good for bones. But if you are going to take continuously, consult with a doctor also for better understanding and specific with your body conditions. Regards, Thank-s

First to be an addict of anything is dangerous because it means that you can consume more than required by your body. What do you think the excess of coffee will do to your body? It will be doing havoc to your system.Reduce your intake of coffee, then take milk. But most important is that there are food supplements that can help. You can go to GNLD food Suplements and chose any from there.I promise they do work
