I have forgotten how painful it was

I was running about the house just now and I got too close to my bed, I scrape my shin against the edge and now, it's red and swollen with some skin scraped off. I run it under the water and it was very painful. I seemed not to have cuts and bruises for a long time and I have forgotten how painful it is when water touches it. So, when's the last time you had a cut? Have you forgotten how painful it was? Are you accident-prone?

I would suggest you tie them down, use rocks and boulders if necessary. Let me send you a supply of medicinal oils and bandages for all your hurts.

oh I know that feeling since I was a kid! I go roller skating around a lot and when I wasn't good at it yet I'd fall down a lot and get bruises and scratches and scraped skin. Not a good feeling. I gotta say I'm fortunate enough *knocks on wood* that I have never been very prone to many accidents. As for the last time having a cut or an injury, I think it was a few years ago. Only things that happen mostly to me now is that I often hit with my elbow to a chair or something and I get this unpleasant feeling when hitting a 'funny bone' hate that so much! it's like electricity would go through your elbow lol

I know the "elecitricity" feeling, it's like the whole arm is paralysed for a while and that is really an unpleasant feeling which, luckily, only lasts for a while. Haha, your "touch wood" thingy is quite funny, I didn't know it's a universal belief. It's a very common saying here.

Yes I think so, I seldom hear people saying it nowadays. Maybe nowadays people are not so superstitious about this in particular?

yeah I hate it when I get this feeling, so annoying. lol and I didn't know it's an universal belief either, but it's quite popular here, though it's quite an old saying too, so not many use it anymore.

I tend to get blisters instead of cuts and whent the liquid is out and the skin also falls off, they hurt until a layer of "healing" skin has formed. I also sometimes walk into things and get huge blue marks on the spot where i hit the table or a corner. But it is very rarely that i get cuts or fall down and scrape the knees etc.

My feet seems to be inbetween two shoe sizes, so when i find a pair i fit 100% well i tend to by them without thinking.... That is also the way i do blisters, but if the blisters have acchieved a certain size, then sometimes the skin can fall off, and then you are left with a piece without skin, and when that happens that surface is pretty sore...
• Singapore
12 Aug 10
Blisters occur sometimes when the shoe size is not correct. I always use a needle or a pin to poke the blisters and squeeze the liquid out. I thought that was the fastest and most efficient way to heal it. It could be painful sometimes though.

Shoes seem to be always ill-fitting that it's hard to find a really suitable pair. Blisters are caused by constant abrasions of the skin against something, like our shoes or other rough surface, sometimes we could not take our shoes off and the abrasion continue to take place, then the whole piece of skin may come out and that is a really painful moment.

I think I had a cut just last week. I still remember that it was very painful but I can't really imagine and describe how painful it was as if reliving it, but I remember that I fainted when I got cut because of the pain. I hope I wouldn't get hurt again, I dont want to faint.

@scourge: yeah.. it was a pretty big cut on my finger. I didn't faint because I saw blood but I just fainted because of the pain. It was horrible. @bluemoonpavilion: no, i didn't really lose a lot of blood because I was able to stop the bleeding by putting a cloth on it (for about an hour to really stop the blood from dripping). But i fainted because of the extreme pain.

kharlav, Oh dear, did you lose a lot of blood and you fainted? That must be a very big cut...be careful and don't get hurt again... scourge, Wow, you scar must be your trademark now....or a special feature of yours, no one else has it....

It seems that girls are more sensitive to pain? I'm a boy with blunted nerve. I don't feel painful at all when I got a little cut or bruise. I think it's because I had too many injections when I was a child. Do you feel pain when being mainlined? I can only feel a cold pin sliding into my vein. Hope you'll be all right soon! Good luck!

"mainline" means giving(or having?) an intravenous injection. I found this word in an electronic dictionary. It's Chinese meaning "Ba Zhu Ru Jing Mai". I'm not sure whether I did use it properly. My mother and my cousin(girl, Biao Jie) said they felt extremely painful when having an intravenous injection, but I didn't feel any pain. That's why I said girls might be more sensitive. Now it looks you are like me more and your husband is like my cousin more... it really depends on individual person.

I think I know what you mean, injection into the veins... is it the same like when we donate blood? I experienced that many times but I didn't find it painful.

"girls are more sensitive to pain?" Not sure how true this statement is. When I need to get an injection, I usually don't mind and can even look at the needle injecting into my vein. But my husband would get very tensed and nervous, not sure whether it's because he think it's painful or some psychological problem. What is "mainlined"? The cut is healing already though I can still see white flesh among the red skin. Thanks for your concern.

I am very accident prone. It seems I can't go two weeks without having some kind of injury. Just the other day, I was on an abandoned construction site with my friends (which I now realise screams accident). In hindsight, I guess I shouldn't have been barefoot as there was broken glass and rubble everywhere. I actually managed to avoid these hazards though, and stub my toe while climbing over a low wall. It knocked a large portion of skin off and there was a considerable amount of blood. I tied it up with a sock, limped home and cleaned it up. It didn't really hurt when it happened, but it sure did when I poured iodine solution on it. As a result of the accident, my big toenail is in the process of coming off. It really is quite annoying.

My heart was already beating fast as I was reading your story at the construction site. That was definitely a hazardous place and you actually went in barefoot!? Luckily you did not meet any rusty nails.... I hope your toenail grows back soon, I've heard sometimes it doesn't grow back or take years.

Years back that I had a serious cut on my finger. I was gardening when I accidentally hit my finger and the cut was so painful. I may not be accident prone but when get to hurt myself, it really is painful. I sometimes couldn't bear it to the point of passing out.

I suppose different people has different tolerance level for pain or even the sight of blood. I guess your cut must be quite deep for you to feel that way.

hi bluemoonpavilion I hardly ever get cuts anymore as I do notdo anycooking here. but yesterday I was smoothing skin lotion on my arm and sawthis huge bruise on the side of my arm, and wondered when the heck I did that. I just barely remember someone going past me in the hall here with their walker and they must have bumpedmy arm as the person called out Patsie are you okay? and at the time I do not think it hurt. It does now. lol lol. I am a diabetic so little cuts can be a pain to get healed at times.

It has happened to me many times that unknown bruises just appeared here and there on my arms or legs. At least you remember the incident causing your bruise, it must have been a heavy to cause such a big bruise to your arm.

Ouch! Getting cuts on a regular basis? Maybe you could change to a different type of shaver? I'm glad I do not have to worry about this problem, I don't like to feel pain everyday. Why didn't you have to shave everyday? LOL

For me a couple of weeks back when I kicked my toes against the sharp edge of the bed. A stinging pain that went away ofter a while. I can be quite accident prone due to my weak ankles. I can be standing one moment and the next I'm groaning and moaning in pain on the floor. I remember distinctly when I was travelling in Beijing last year, I knew there were steps in front of me and told myself to be careful. Somehow, I don't know what happened, I missed my balance and I'm on the floor.
• Singapore
12 Aug 10
What are your ankles made of, rubber? You mean you would fall down without realizing it? Regarding your incident in Beijing, I had a similar experience. When I was standing at the top of the steps, somehow I had a premonition I was going to miss one step and the next thing I know, I was falling down the flight of steps. It was really strange.

Everytime I get a cut, the pain surprises me, but it also could be that like you, i don't get them often at all, i hate scars and all that kinda stuff on my skin so i'm really adamant about having maderma and neosporin around so that I can help heal my cuts quickly.

It's good to be well prepared with these stuff, you are ready for any emergency then.

Oh dear. It must have been painful. But you seem tough enough. You'll get over it fast. I can't remember the last time I had one or a cut. It isn't as much now than a few years back when I used to play football. Glad I'm not accident prone.
• Singapore
12 Aug 10
Haha, I'm not whining about the pain now, it has reduced a lot since then though I didn't apply anything on it. Better make sure your knees and feet are well-protected if and when you play football again.

A bike accident could be so serious! I know a friend who had one and she had to have plastic surgery. A child on a tricycle suddenly stopped in front of her, forcing her to stop, but the child couldn't control himself and rode the tricycle up her face. Her lip and chin area was hurt and she need stitches and plastic surgery, it was really scary. I'm glad you took the emergency steps by cleaning your wound and treating it properly.

Ouch! It's always the little cuts that hurt the worst. Like paper cuts. I'm very clumsy and tend to walk into things and get bruises a lot, but I don't usually get a lot of cuts.
• Singapore
11 Aug 10
Oh yah, the paper cuts are really bad, they are small, sometimes unidentifiable but they hurt whenever we have to wash hands or do anything with our fingers. Take care, clumsy girl...bruises are as painful as cuts....

Yeah, I'm really careless when it comes to cutting myself with a knife accidentally while chopping some spices for my dish. I cut myself most of the time, even if I'm just opening my son's milk, I cut my finger with the top cover. Too careless and yes, it's really painful and because I cut myself most of the time, I don't easily forget the pain. so I manage not to run my cut water immediately cause I know, it will increase the pain. I just hold the cut for few minutes until it stops bleeding then I clean it with wound cleansing materials and put a bandage on it.
• Singapore
12 Aug 10
You are quite accident-prone, aren't you? I suppose you must keep a first aid box in the house then and stock up on iodine solution and band aids. For me, I always grit my teeth and wash the wound immediately to clean off any dirt but I have not experienced a really bad cut with a big open wound.
