The subject of fasting is a global issues, where people abstain from food. What is actually the purpose of fasting?

I fast because it is necessary for me to be sensitive in the Holy Presence of God. i believe that when my body is weak, i am more vulnerable to the leading of His Spirit. i fast when i want answers from God or i want something so badly. like healing or provision. and i fast because it rids of the toxin in my body. i had tried fasting for 3 days, i did not eat after 6pm-6am. it was when we were praying for our country's revival and the appointment of our next president. it was a national prayer gathering and many people all over the Philippines came to pray and fast. it was an awesome experience. we stayed up from 6pm-6am, praying and fasting. i was with my church friends and family. it was easier to control yourself from eating knowing that your not alone doing that. God bless you!

Even Jesus fasted, leading by example as to how to beseech God for answers. Don't fast because you want something, but fast because you are looking for an answer from our Lord. Fast because you are asking the Father for direction and guidance. And don't be disheartened if what you WANT doesn't happen, because HIS will be done above all else. We shut out food so that we can allow God in as we focus solely on Him. Peace and blessings to you in your walk with Him!

Many people do it for health reasons, others for religious reasons. Some people do it to a schedule while others do it whenever they feel is good. It is also necessary before undergoing certain medical tests or examinations or surgery. Abstaining from all foods & even liquids has the effect of resting the body & clearing the mind. The body is better able to fight certain illnesses then, like gut infections or viruses, as there's no food for the bug to live on, which works out as a cheaper cure than medicines which may not work. It is recommended to also physically rest the body, as in meditation, for the best effect & also to do this under some sort of supervision. All the Best :-)

There was a very healthy radio commentator (Ernie Baron) who advocated fasting as a means to rid the body of toxins and harmful substances ingested when we eat "dangerously" e.g. at the fastfoods ;) Besides a healthy (physiological) effect, it seems fasting also simplifies our mental processes so we have less delusions i.e. we are better able to relate to body-less metaphysical existence founded on total "oneness" with the Infinite Intelligent Energy, (i.e. God, if you will), that makes all things possible ... What do you think?
