Would people go that extreme in frugal?

At the restaurant yesterday, while I was waiting to pay for my bill at the counter, I saw another customer brought her own calculator, and ask for the wait staff to present her the itemized dishes. Then she took the menu and match the price and calculate it on her own. At the final result, she complained about that wait staff overcharge her 1 cent. Reluctantly, the cashier refund her one cent, then she re - calculate it one more time. I was amazed that how frugal people are right now. But I won't bring my own calculator to a restaurant and match my final result to the bill I was charged. If I saw the bill unfair, it might came from my mental calculation, and the ball park figure. Would you bring your own calculator to the restaurant?

Yes and no. Yes, I would probably bring a calculator to a restaurant to check the prices (my cell phone has a calculator, so it isn't extra work to get one). I wouldn't want to be overcharged for my meal. At the same time, I wouldn't demand my one cent back. I'm all for saving money and I always say every dollar counts, but I'd let that one penny go. I suspect that that person has been overcharged before and maybe by more than just one cent. So now, they want to be certain it doesn't happen again. And maybe getting their cent back was more about the principle of the matter.

Don't need to. What with calculator being part of a mobile phone, there's no need to bring an actual calculator. I agree with what the woman did, do it myself too. The thing is, in my mind even 1 penny if collected over time could help in future costs. Especially if I buy stuff that end in .99 a lot.

Never! No way! I'd be too ashamed to bring one. I'd probably do a mental calculation or use my phone. But a calculator?! No way! And it's just one cent. That won't kill. So okay, if I am in frugal living, I won't even eat at a restaurant, I'd cook my own food.

There is a calculator in my cell phone and I use it when my friends and I want to share the bill, but aside from that I don't use it. If they overcharge me some cents I probably don't even notice. Inside my head I usually calculate approximately how much I have to pay, and if the bill sounds correct I don't check the prices or use a calculater. If there is a huge difference I notice of course and in those cases I ask for a refund. One time I was overcharged $15, and I got a refund when I told the waiter, but if it was one cent or a few cents I wouldn't even notice it.

Absolutely not. I think that is a bit extreme. If you don't have much money, why are you going out to eat in the first place? I don't have much money to spend right now so we do not go out to eat. That's just the way it is. People never fail to amaze me. That's funny and ridiculous at the same time.

I understand being frugal, but complaining about a penny is different than if the amount was $10.00 over or something. I say that if people don't want to spend money from their paycheck they should make some extra money online to pay for the fun stuff like eating out. Complaining about a penny is stingy and does not make you look good as a costumer.

I always bring calculator with me especially when I,m in a market. sometimes I use my cellphone to calculate when I'm purchasing something. I never try calculating my bill in a restaurant before. I think there's nothing wrong recomputing your bill.

I won't call that frugal!! It's way too extreme or rather being petty and calculative!! I have come across someone like her when in working in the service sector and I really hate it!! From my experience, whenever before she placed her order for food, she will be asking for the price of the items, holding up the whole queue.. After serving her, her food, she will then compare the portion to the amount of money she paid, make a fuss when she's not convinced.. When it comes to payment, same case as what u saw with that customer, but this customer of mine is more extreme. She even asked for discount just because she worked in the same building!! When we told her, her order is not entitled to discount because it's a set meal, she asked to see our manager!! Luckily there's nothing much the manager can do abt the discount and all the staffs were hiding in the kitchen laughing away, seeing her unhappy, rejection face!!
