Did you know that onions are bursting with all kinds of wonderful nutrients? They have tons of antioxidants, they fight against cancer and heart disease. But I just read that onions are better if you keep them stored for a while instead of eating them new. And I also read that red onions are better than their white cousins. I use both (red and white). And even if I didn´t know that old onions (that´s how we call them) were healthier, I prefer them to new onions because they are easier to cut finelly with a knife. I could not do much in my kitchen if I did not use onions. How about you? Are you an onoin lover? Which are your favorite onions? Share!

I use more white onions than red ones, Jo because they are a lot cheaper here. A typical chilean salad is made with tomatoes and raw sliced onion. YUMMY!!!

I know that there are good things with the things we eat, but the problem is, too much of something will not be always good for you. For one thing, if you eat all those onions all the time, then soon you'll smell like them. Hehehehe.. Further, onions aren't the only ones we can live on. Similarly, it would be quite dangerous if you should suddenly stop taking the medicines you are taking for conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

There´s no problem there, my friend. I did not say that we should only eat onions or eat them in great quantities. Nothing is good if you eat too much. I did not say either that you should eat onions instead of meds that your doctor has given. But they might help. There are meds for diabetics but a no sugar diet helps too. Right? That´s what I meant. Take care!

Huh, you mean that onion that's been sitting in the refrigerator too long is good for me? Cool. I like my onions COOKED, doesn't matter what kind!

Yup! Only I don´t keep onions or potatoes inside the house or in the fridge. I place them in the garage in a cardboard(among so much junk that it could go the the Guinness).I like mine raw, cooked, fried, you name it .

i just realized that white onions are actually yummier when my friend once introduced that to me. Regarding cooking, I usually add onions just for the good smell but I don't really eat them as they may cause bad breath. Is it true?

Don´t you ever fry diced onions, a clove of garlic, some salt and pepper and add it to your legumes? Try it: it´s wonderful. Tomato sauce for pasta is done with fried onions too.

I use onions a lot in my cooking and I agree that there isn’t very much that won’t be enhanced by onions! I wasn’t aware that onions are so nutritionally good for us.Interesting to read they are good to fight cancer with... I almost always use white onions and I have been known to store them for a while before using them.

When I was a teenager I used to hate onions, and never wanted anything to do with them. However, during my twenties, I contracted asthma, and through some research, found out that raw onions help to alleviate the symptoms. Now I am not the type to just start munching on an onion out of the blue, but I have been eating them with food, such as in my cheeseburger, or other food. It has helped me. Not to the point where I can throw my inhalers away for good (I wish..), but enough so that they are not needed quite so often. A lot of vegetables and fruits contain enough vitamins and antioxidants. It's been proven that a person who eats a healthy helping of fruits and vegetables every day will have a better immune system than someone who does not.

I love onions. in fact, when I cook, it is incomplete without onions. I believe onion is not only to make flavor the food but also an anti oxidant which is good for our lungs to prevent from any broncho diseases.

I´m talking about onions now although garlic is as good as taking medicines. I could not make a good casserole or legumes without some fried diced onions and a clove of garlic. As for raw onion, try putting some sugar over it and leaving it for at least 10 minutes. Then wash and use.

I mainly use red onions and put them on pretty much everything. Raw or cooked, they're a staple for my kitchen. You actually get the best benefits from onions by releasing as much juice as you can. Mince or finely chop your onions, and allow them to sit for 10 minutes or so before you cook with them or eat them. Letting them sit allows for the important thiopropanal sulfoxide to develop.

Onions are wonderful as health goes but also add a zest to any dish. As for garlic, my youngest daughter added a clove of garlic to the baby´s formula in Winter and they never had a big cold.

Onions are very good for your health, along with other members of the family (leeks, garlinc, chives, bunch onions and so on). But although not everyone likes raw onion, a lot of dishes need onions cut in many ways. Fried onions are delicious too and a good addition to hamburgers. Have a nice day!

I usually use brown onions for most everything but in summer I use red when my daughter comes. I keep a bag of chopped onion in the freezer for emergencies and I also have a jar of dried onions. Onions have a wonderful flavour and I enjoy them raw and cooked. My only wish is to learn how to properly caramelise them in a fry pan. I've never been able to do that.

Hello there! Im an onion lover as well nowadays... Before, when i was young, i used to hate veggies especially onion and garlic. Here in our country we always used onion, garlic and tomatoes for our viands. I hate them really because they are always there in almost our everyday dishes. When i grew much older, and became educated in school about the goodness of vegetable in our health, i appreciate veggies little by little including onions. And now that im a homemaker already, i salute onions for making my dishes delicious as ever. Yes, ive heard that it contained lots of therapeutic properties not to mention its very good taste. I could eat them raw in my burgers or sandwich, i love them in my pizzas as well and likes them hot when cooked as onion rings for my snack. I love both white and red onions, they're sweet when already cooked. Good night!
