does anyone ever play D&D 2nd edition any more? i seem to like it the most out of all that i have played but i don't really like the magic system. it makes magic user's spells kinda useless. also, what is with the obsession over rangers. 80% of the people i have known have made a ranger character to start with. is it some weird thing that people think rangers are the best. i am thinking it had to do with LOTR, lol

Coming from the earliest days of the game, I always preferred the old rules, but over the years I have kept what I loved and made alterations when I felt they were improvements. It took me a long time to adjust to the idea of D20 style Armor Class, but I'm in the 21st Century now I guess. One thing I haven't surrendered is Spells. The latest rules completely destroy the old spell lists and I just can't give that up. If I keep changing the rules, I'm going to have to publish my own version and it won't resemble the the new D&D at all. But that's what I've always loved about the game: the designers new their rules were just the start, Dungeon Masters have always been encouraged to make their worlds playable however necessary! Keep using those 2nd Edition rules if you like them and tweak the parts you don't like in spell use. As for Rangers, I think they've always been popular to the strategic player. Good defense, short range and long range offense and eventually spell access. Even better for Campaigns that are heavy in outdoor adventures. But, yep, I'll bet LOTR had something to do with it! Happy gaming!

2nd Edition is too inconsistent for me; sometimes you want a high roll, sometimes you want a low roll; all classes are on different XP charts; and different level maximums for different races. All too nonsensical for me, even with it's crazy rules bloat, 3rd Edition has more grounds in consistency.

I'm all about 3rd edition, even with 4th edition coming and going and 5th on the horizon.
