do you give your pets breakfast?

I have three dogs at home and I am in charge of feeding them three times a day. In the morning I give them bread which I cut into pieces, then I feed them again at lunch and then again in the evening. However, I know many dog or pet owners who do not give their pets food in the morning. Some even feed their pets once a day. I have a friend who gives bread soaked in milk as breakfast for her pet dogs. How about you? Do you give your pets some breakfast?

Most experts recommend feeding an adult dog twice a day, morning and evening, but this depends to an extent on the age and activity level of the dog. Puppies are generally fed more often after weaning, gradually reducing the number of feeds as the dog grows. If a dog is fed more times than recommended, it can quickly become overweight. It is important, too, that a dog is fed at the same time of day and that food is not left out, which can lead to 'snacking' - one of the major causes of overweight. Dogs need a different balance to their diet to humans and must NOT be given certain foods, such as onions or chocolate which can be toxic to dogs. Many snack foods, such as potato chips/crisps contain far too much salt. The best way to be sure that your dog is getting a balanced and healthy diet is to buy dog food from a reputable dealer. The balance of protein and carbohydrate will depend very much on the dog's activity level, its breed and size, so it's important to choose the right mix. Dry dog food is easy to store, virtually odourless and contains the proper mix of meat protein, grains, fat, vitamins and minerals. It also helps with bowel movement control. Fresh water should always be available, of course, and replenished as necessary. If you prefer to make your own dog food, you need to make sure that there is a good balance of protein, rice and other whole grains and vegetables. A dog can be quite healthy and happy on a vegetarian diet (whereas cats MUST have meat) but this is much more difficult to balance correctly. However you choose to feed your dog, stick to a regular diet. Unlike humans, most dogs enjoy the same thing (more or less) every day and their stomachs cope with this better.

Hi Richnai. Cats need two things in their diet which they normally get from meat: taurine and arachidonic acid. Other animals (including humans and dogs) can produce what they need from the components of a vegetarian diet. Both taurine and arachidonic acid are available in synthetic form (as non-meat products) and, in fact, synthetic taurine is added to canned cat food, since the processing removes much of the natural taurine. It is also used in those 'energy' drinks such as Red Bull (even though most humans have quite sufficient taurine for their needs). If you fed your cats a specially formulated vegetarian cat food, it probably contained these two things. I don't know, off hand, whether raw egg contains them.

No, not really. My dog is not a big eater, so he has food at all times, in his bowl and he eats whenever he wants to. Sometimes he likes to eat in the morning, but usually not. I think he eats more like... lunch (in the middle of the day) and dinner (in the evenings), I guess that is just what he likes...

Binne is eight and a half months old, so she still has three meals a day. But as she grows up, I will reduce the number of meals, because for an adult dog one meal a day is enough. And healthy! Probably Binne's unique meal will be breakfast, because it is known that after beeing fed, a dog tend to be more calm and relaxed. And I want Binne to be calm and relaxed when I'm at work and she's home alone.

we give our pets food three times a day now. we used to feed them twice a day but since my dad said that one of our dogs looked skinny he decided to give them food 3 times a day. we feed one with just dog food and the other with people food, because that's what they prefer.

I feed our dogs twice a day - once in the morning and once in the evening. I prepare rice, viand, and dog food in one basin. I almost forgot to mention that we have 4 dogs and 2 cats It is quite a task to feed them because they would sometimes try to eat each other's food

I am really bad about giving my dog extra food. I give her dog food in the morning and night. When I eat my breakfast I will give her whatever I don't finish into her dog food. For dinner depending on what it is I wind up scraping some into her bowl to. I know I should not because I don't want her to get overweight, but they like it so much I can't help myself.
