I finished Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol this week. While the book is fast paced and generally interesting, it is not in the same league as Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. You can read my complete review of the book at: http://www0.epinions.com/review/Book_The_Lost_Symbol_Dan_Brown/content_522748792452 What are your views on the book? Cheers! Ram

I'm afraid that I did, despite warning voices in my head, waste some of my precious time reading yeat anothr YAWN Brown book. The formula and structure of this book were exactly the same as Da Vinci Code and Demons and Angels, the other books in the Robert Langdon series, and VERY predictable. I read the Digital Fortress after his two best sellers, and I swore then I'd never read another of his books - the guy is not even a good writer!! But I gave into pressure and tried out his latest, sadly!! Let's face it - without the Dan Brown name (on the back of the DVC) this book would NOT have been a best seller at all!!

I guess religious symbolism as a topic is captivating and as he is the only current author who seems to be writing novels based on that, we get pulled into it :) Cheers! Ram

Yes, the success of the first two books definitely was the reason why this book sold so many copies. Also, there seems to be a set pattern to all the Dan Brown books. But yes it is interesting to see how he has used the religious symbolism. Cheers! Ram

@ram_cv: Yes, religious symbolism is captivating. Who doesn't love conspiracy theories? The first part was ok and captivating but it was disappointing reading it towards the ending. Yeah it did sound like a sermon. If the book The Lost Symbol was a bestseller, it was only because of the fact that two of his previous books spoke about the same topic on religion. I appreciated the book for highlighting Freemasonry and mentioning Rosicrucianism as I am a Rosicrucian myself. But I wished there was a better ending to the book.

yeah read it recently...it was just ok ok definitely not in the league of angels and demons and the da vinci code. But still the book is captivating and worth a read. The references made to the freemasons in the novel are sure to increase the number of people wanting to become a member of the freemasonry group nevertheless and for that the freemason guys would be thankfull to Dan brown

Yes, definitely Angels and Demons and Da Vinci code were better. Also, the template of the stories is pretty much the same with different puzzles around. Cheers! Ram

Yes, I just finished reading it. I am in the process also of writing down my review (I usually upload in shvoong, but I might also try this on triond). I agree with you. It is spellbinding but nowhere near Da Vinci Code. What I liked about DVC is that it was full of interesting facts weaved into the story. The Lost Symbol is not that captivating mainly because I have not been to Washington. But it was an interesting read too. The book is not that controversial and a bit preachy.

I am actually listening to it now as a book on cd, and am finally almost done. I agree that it is ok, but nowhere near as captivating as the other two books, and it seems a lot less believable, too. I am not sure I could get through it as a book, even though I devoured the other two. And yet it was very popular and stayed on the bestseller list forever. But I do think the story is somewhat strained and does not seem to flow as well as the other two books.

Exactly. And the last few chapters feel like sermons rather than a novel :) Cheers! Ram

It will be a best seller based on his past publications. But I think this one does not compare with the past two Robert Langdon novels from Dan Brown. Cheers! Ram
