My computer is so slow and old...

I've had my computer for about 4 years now and it is getting weaker and weaker. I don't plan on changing it yet, due to financial problems and that I know I can be more patient, but I am tempted to get a new one. How often do you change your computer? Is 4 years too long?

Everything is relative. It all depends on the task range you use the device for. If it is a plain data entry job, spreadsheet compilation you don't need a hi-tech PC. However when you deal with serious graph apps and video, better find more or less decent piece of machinery. Otherwise, you are most likely to be stressed out. I try to upgrade mine (not necessarily buying a new one) once in 3 years.

Oh I see, I see. That's a good idea. I hope I don't have any bugs, but maybe I will start over and reinstall... sigh...

As far as I know, surfing, file download ,and other online activities don't require a lot of PC resources. If your computer is working very slowly while online it might be just infected with virus, malware, adware - anything that is working at the same time, say collecting info on your PC or doing some other dirty tricks. In that case you might just format HDD and install everything from a blank page. As for upgrade, that's how I do that. Say I have a PC worth 500USD. After 3 years its value might be around 200-250 USD. I sell my old one and buy something better (not necessarily NEW).

I would say an easy way to get your computer to last a little longer would be to either buy more RAM (Which will speed it up as it allows the processor to store more things on the mother board which will help with performance) Also you could get a second Hard Drive so that your computer can store the bigger programs that have come out and so that you have more space to store things. I just today updated my computer by having ram and now the games are running smoother than they where as it can store the graphics on the motherboard and not have to jump to the hard drive. Simple upgrades like increasing RAM and getting a bigger or second Hard Drive can extend the time before having to upgrade.

Yes my computer is also now getting 4 years old. And I also facing problem related to speed of processing very slow. So now I am planning for buying a new Ram with higher capacity. I have in present 256 MB of Ram. And now I am palling for purchasing 1 GB of Ram. And I hope after installing it my systems speed improves.

It seems like they all 'expire' at a certain time frame so we will have to spend money on a new one!

Well you dont have to change the whole of your computer if the problem is just that its getting slow. Because the problem is not with whole of your computer, it may be just because of your processor or RAM. So you can just replace your processor or increase your RAM instead of changing it all, which will be more economic and affordable.
